To

Athlon 64 3300+ Socket 754
1gig DDR400
6600GT
160gig HD
DVD-RW
CD-ROM
8 in 1 Media Reader
Wireless LAN
300 Gig Maxtor External Hard Drive

Like night and freaking day differance

My parents replaced that computer with a HP Pavilion with a Pentium 4 520 2.8GHZ with HT
Very nice upgrade. That's a bigger jump than my P2-450 to A64 3200+ Venice. I feel bad for you when you had to use that P-233 computer.

I guess I'm just an old bastard.....nobody else here has mentioned my first computer, which I got when it first came out:

Timex Sinclair 1000 (I don't know if it was even 1mhz....might have been Khz) w/4kb internal memory (yes...thats KB's).....bought the 16kb external memory module which cost as much as the damn computer!! Tape drive, 13in black n white tv. Sound?!? I think it buzzed & beeped occasionally.
TI 99-4a.....with peripheral box.....16kb ram
Tandy Color Computer II.....16kb....desoldered internal ram chips, soldered in 64kb ram (damn that was an upgrade!!) 300 baud modem.....you can type 10 times faster than this thing.
Commoder 64/128.....finally a floppy drive!!!!
Amiga 500.....why would anyone NEED 1MB of ram?!? 2 floppy drives, 2400 baud modem, 13" monitor
Amiga 2000 Loved those amigas!!! Holy $hit I have a 20mb hard drive
Thats my first 10yrs of computers.....1982-1992

my biggest jump was from a P4 450mhz CPU that had same specs as yours except without a video card to P4 2.66ghz with 512mb ram. :p

now i have a AMD x2 with 2GB pc 3200 and 6800GT

Suprisingly, it played Command and Conquer Red Alert (my favorite game of all time) suprisingly well. The only reason that my parents replaced it was because my sister got into a media program at her school, and had to edit video, and the 233 just wouldn't cut it :D

red alert will play on anything man... lol

i think the min req for that game was a 486/66

(well, anything but stuff before the 486/66 :p)

Let's see... I went from...

8MHz 8088-2 w/ 640K and a 32meg HD
am386DX-40 that I topped out at 8megs with a 120meg drive
HP made Pentium 66 MMX with 16megs and I think drive that actually broke a gig (I forget)
Gateway made PII-450 with 128megs and 16.4gigs between two drives
Athlon T-bird 900 OCed to 1200 with 256 megs and same 16.4gigs
Barton 2500+ OCed to 2350 w/ 512megs and a 120 gigger
Finally, the system in my sig.

i went from:
apple IIc
k6-2 450
athlon-xp 2800+
xp-m [email protected] ghz
[email protected] ghz
[email protected](ugh on upgrade)
[email protected] ghz
3.2e@4 ghz
pentium m [email protected] ghz
celeron M @2.2 ghz(amasingly its faster then prescott)
next... pentium m 760 @ 3 ghz(going to stop here for a while)
the apple IIc was used since before i was born up to 1999(im 19 now) and the k6-2 was used up to late 2003 the athlon-xp was for about a year and a half, the rest i dont know...

Here's my history...
Apple Classic II :D
Rev. A iMac G3 233mhz :D (in mid 1998) 1299$
HP 1.5ghz p4 256mb pc2100 w/ TNT2 :D (early 2002) 1499$
current rig Qpack xp 2500+ 1.5ghz 3200 6800nu :) (summer 2005) ~ 600-700$
waitin for the intel-based ibooks to come out....(early/mid 2006?) ~1000$?

plus i had a 9600np early 2004 to hold my gaming (cs/tribes) needs over until the 2005 overhaul...

so 3500$ on computers in the last 7 years... not too bad i guess...

I think every computer I buy from here on out will be sff/laptop...

I recently built my own just like yourself because i also got tired of my last store bought pc (sony vaio). Over the 4 years that I had it. I had to upgrade the video card. Replace 2 hard drives, replace cd rom and dvd rom drives, and a new monitor. So instead of keep buying new parts I built my own. Old rig was a pentium 4 1.6ghz,512mb ram,9600 pro 128mb. My new rig i built is a X2 4400+,A8N-Sli Premium,2 250GB Sata Raid-0 drives,Windows XP Pro,BFG 7800GTX,2 GB Dual Channel Ram. I remember just before buying and putting together my new rig going into ironforge in world of warcraft and lagging so bad that it ruined the gaming experience for me. Getting 5FPS if i was lucky. Now I can go into ironforge anytime of the day silky smooth and get anywhere between 55-65 FPS. I'm now actually able to play games like WoW and Fear and enjoy them. Had no problems building my first new rig and was able to update all drivers easily. It was costly alltogether cause i spent almost $2,300 on the whole system but it was worth it.

i'll jump in...

Family pc's.. (i'm only 22)
486 dx2/66 (later upgraded to 586)
p2(or 1?) 200mhz (matrix mil 2, fastest thing not he block at the time)
amd k6 600mhz (viper 770 gpu)
my own...

450mhz dell optiplex gx1 (from the k6, slower but all mine so i loved it, still running as my web/irc server (debian))

compaq pres 1500us(1.6p4, 256mb ram, 7500mobile, biggest upgrade i've ever had i think; was huge in cs 1.5(or was it 1.4?) at the time)

amd xp2000+ (friend mobo+all opticals once due to shitty psu; first "build", 9000pro duck taped in it)

3000 winchester, bfg 6800gt, etc etc (later upgraded to a 3200 venice as i found a buyer for the winchester. another big jump made for cs again, this time css which runs like a dream)'

and yea, i'm oggling an x2 right now but don't want to trade in my 6800gt...

Just throught i would through this out there cuz its kinda amuzing?
i went from a compaq 486 dx 66 to a slot a 700mhz athlon.. that was one hell of a jump oh yea i finaly got windows then too instead of dos

I have a buddy whos got a PIII 500mhz lol, takes him forever to load up photoshop. He doesnt really do anything except play MP3s,browse the internet and use Adobe.

I've never really made large jumps in technology. I stay with the curve typically. Or close to it.

My family's first PC was an 8086 that ran at 6 MHz without turbo and 10 MHz with turbo. (Yes, there was a turbo button on the PC, LOL). I don't know why I still remember the specs, but I still do. It had 640 kB of RAM, a 20 MB HDD, and 256-color (EGA?) display. It also had a 5.25" 360 kB floppy disk drive. Obviously, no mouse, CD-ROM, or speakers.

It had ran various versions of DOS on there, that I kept upgrading. Then my father tried to downgrade DOS b/c he thought the latest version I had on there was hogging up too much hard drive space. But he simply copied the old DOS files into the DOS directory, which really screwed things up. It had to be reformatted, which was my first experience in that.

Those were the days ...

Oooh, stories are fun.

I think I was 5 when I got my first computer.
386 of some sort, I can't remember anything else about it, just that it had Windows 3.11
This computer came from a bank and I am pretty sure it was stolen
It was housed in a HUGE tall tower that I wish we kept.

Then when I was 10 I think is when I got a newer computer.
Pentium 133mhz
16mb RAM
2GB HDD
Windows 95

Then 2 years later I got an HP system which my Mom still uses.
Celeron 733mhz
64mb RAM
30GB HDD (Infamous Quantum Firefball) Now has a 3GB WD HDD
At one time it had a Radeon 9000
Running Windows XP Pro.

Then after that I built my first computer.
AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (Overclocked to 1.91ghz)
Chaintech APOGEE 7VJL
512mb DDR333
120GB HDD
Used the PCI Radeon 9000 in it for a while, then I got a 9600Pro which was awesome when I got it for about 2 months :) Then in February of this year I upgraded to a 6600GT.

Then in April I basically built a new computer.
AMD Sempron 2800+
DFI LanParty UT NF3
6600GT
1GB DDR400
6600GT
Same 120GB HDD

Yesterday I sold that CPU, Motherboard, and Video Card to a friend.
So for now till I order my new stuff I am on an oldschool computer.
AMD K6-2/500mhz
256mb RAM
30GB HDD (From the HP Heheh)
ATi Rage 128 Pro VIVO
Voodoo 2 SLI

When I get my new stuff I will be running the following.
AMD Opteron 146
DFI board I hope, if I can afford it.
1GB DDR400
120GB HDD
x800GTO^2

And some spare parts I have lying around are a P2 300mhz (Slot 1) and a motherboard to go with it.

So I have had quite a few computers over the years, and especially for my age being 16 :)

^ Yes, you've gone through a lot of companies and you're still only halfway into your teenage years! Have fun w/ that Opteron system when you get around to buying and building it.

Edit: Woohoo!! I just got "promoted" from Limp Gawd to Gawd!! :D

Hmm, well apart from my current rig none of tthese were really mine, but still.

P 200MMX - Thats all I remember.
P3 666Mhz with onboard TNT2 - this is still around, although over its lifespan it has had various HDD and RAM changes.
Then to the rig in my sig.
