windows 8 airplane mode

I have someone who is having a problem, windows 8 is only showing a black screen with a square saying airplane mode on/off. Holding down the power button to force a restart does not clear it. Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this? They cant get past it so that they can use the laptop, so right now it is unusable.

The only problem is that all they can see is a black screen with a box at the top saying airplane mode on/off. So they cant see or do anything else no desktop no metro or whatever Microsoft wants to call it. They said that they can click the box for airplane mode and turn it off and on but the screen stays just black with no way to navigate or do anything else with windows 8
