Is it worth it to step up from a 7800gt to a 7900gt?
How much performance increase would I see in, say, HL2, or BF2?

I went from a 7800GTX to a 7900GT, and yes, in high res and high IQ settings, the 7900 beats the 7800 by a large enough margin to make a step up from the 7800...especially in online play....

If you are limited to 1280x1024 res, no use switching IMO.

the 7900GT is practically the same as a 7800GTX. look at the numbers, there just about identical.

i wouldnt do it. but then i dont know what your financial situation is like. im broke so....

True but the 7900 actually is a fair amount better in high res and high IQ settings....example: I play FAr Cry online...with the 7800GTX, at 1680x1050 settings with "very high" detail settings, I could BARELY get fast enough fps to stay competitive...that's with NO aa at all...

...with the 7900GT, I can play at those same settings with 2x AA on and get better fps than before....

All I needed was the extra 8fps or so to make it smooth....when you are at 35fps, going to 42fps or better IS a large difference (~20%).

QFT

No need unless you are a [H]ardcore user or need to have the latest, IMO.

I say it's totally worth it.

The 7900GT doesn't have a quad of pipes disabled like the 7800GT does, and you can clock the 7900GT to near GTX levels in many cases.

Only bad thing is the 7900GT has had some major quality control issues. I think I'm about to have to RMA the replacement eVGA sent me a couple weeks ago. :(

i'd say depends on what its going to cost you above the shipping. if its very very close in price, then why not? you don't have much to lose but you sure do have something to gain.

i'm hoping that with the release of the 7950 GX2 that the prices of the 7900 GTX cards will drop within a week or two. then try a stepup from my 7900GT CO ;) nice little upgrade for next to nothing indeed. IF that happens and thats a big if.

id say yes it is worth it, the 7900GT is a very powerful card and if you are within the stepup period there is no doubt you would be retarded not to.

I just stepped up from a 7900GTX to a 7950GX2. well worth it.

DO IT! I did from a 7800GT at 491/1.17 to a 7900GT at 557/1726 with 20% more pixel pipes on top of the great overclock. It's a very cheap step-up, you're not buying a new card so it's worth it.

Sell your 7800gt then purchase the 7900gt, make sure you stick with BFG or EVGA though. ;)

qft.

i would buy an XFX card, if there marketing didnt decide that: 1. labalilling the card as Porn quality was a good i dea, 2. there cover picture would be a stuffed animal dog with rabies....

although gainwards been cool in my book ever since there 7900GT 512mb. and Asus was always cool....

but yea. graphics cards. you want BFG or EVGA.

I play Far Cry online as well, just got 2 evga 7900's runs great. When looking at 3dmark scores if anyone goes off of that my cuz had pretty much the same setup as me but he had a 7900 compared to my 7800 I had, i would get a 15K, he was getting 17K (3dmark 03) but now i get like 28K with the sli with nothing oc'd.

as far as FC goes its pretty demanding.

Lets just put it this way. Im currently back to my 7800gtx because i just sent my 7900gtx back to evga for the stepup to the 7950. I totally miss the performance of my 7900gtx. And yes there is a difference. Farcry, Fear, and battlfield take a performance hit running on my 7800gtx whereas my 7900gtx was running the games sooooooooooo smoothly.
