Hello All,

Curious to see what everyone think if I would benefit from an video card upgrade. Currently i have the following:

GIGABYTE GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68
1 x Intel Core i5-2500K
1 x XFX Double D HD-695X-CDFC Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-Bit GDDR5

I've recently jumped back into battlefield 4 and noticing a bit of lag. Other games i play/plan to play :p

rome total war series
Skyrim
FallOut new vegas.
fallout.

Budget:400 MAX

So would upgrade be worthwhile?

What resolution are you playing at? I am in a similar boat as you with my venerable 6970 having some struggles as of late, even at 1080p.

I recently decided to take the plunge and pick up a 1440p monitor and a 290x. I understand that with a 290x (which can be had from the FS forum here for around $260) you can expect almost double the performance from a 69x0 series. Closer to 1.8-ish, but still a sizable upgrade.

A video card upgrade might get you a decent bump at 1080p, but I don't think upgrading anything else would be worthwhile if that's your target gaming res. The 2500K is plenty fast.

How much RAM do you have? If you're not at 8GB, that might be a good bump.

i have 8GB and 256 Intel SSD

I don't think i will increase resolution anymore if possible, until i go two monitor in the future possibly. I don't have the room right now.

There are plenty of 290 deals out there so I would suggest looking at those. And oc that cpu if you have not.

6950 is long in the tooth. Here is the 290 vs the 6950.

An R9 290 @ $250 is currently about as good a bang for the buck value you can get right now. Here is the 290 vs the 970. The 970 goes for ~$350+, and the 980 for even more.

Your gameplay experience will generally be exactly the same if you go with the 970 over the 290, except you'll be $100 poorer for basically no real gameplay experience improvement.

The 980 would definitely be an improvement over the 290, but it's outside of your budget and in my opinion not worth the extra bucks versus the value the 290 brings to the table.

Get a GTX 970 and call it a day. Will cost you anywhere from 329-369 bucks and an i5 2500K would benefit from it. Also overclock the crap out of that processor.
