    DVI-D Dummy Plug?

That's actually not exactly true. It seems to be different based on motherboard, in my experience. I have BAMT running on several different motherboards, and one annoying one will only boot if there's a monitor attached.

    Core i7 w/ 1920 x 1200 screen?

So, I finally broke down and got an HP Dv8t. The screen is only 1920x1080, but I guess I'll live. The main reason for buying it is the $500 off coupon that made it $1000 (coupon ends today). So, what I got was: 1920x1080 18.4" screen 1.66GHz Core i7 4 GB RAM (upgradeable to 8) 320GB...

    Core i7 w/ 1920 x 1200 screen?

I'm typing on a 1920x1200 17" screen right now. It's perfect. I'm not worried about being able to run every game at 1920x1200 with max settings... I'm not really that much of a gamer anymore... but I do a lot of programming, and the extra screen real estate is essential... small text is not a...

    Core i7 w/ 1920 x 1200 screen?

What's with laptop manufacturers putting in smaller and smaller screens these days? 1440 x 900 on a 17" screen? What, am I that blind? I'm not paying for a 17" laptop just to have the font look bigger :/ I've looked around. but there just aren't very many people out there making Core I7s...

Four Reasons Why iPhone Owners Hate AT&T

QFT. You signed a 2 year agreement with AT&T. If you want a new phone before that, you don't get their subsidy. It's the exact same as every other phone and every other telecom. Why is this a surprise to anyone?

    Corsair Announces New 256GB High-Performance

The SSD companies (and retail outlets) need to start listing the random read and write speeds. That's what really matters. And for those asking what 256gigs is for... it's for your OS drive. You don't need a terabyte drive for your OS and applications... no one has that much space just for...

Hardware RAID the solution for hard drive speed woes?

Thanks for all the tips. Right now I'm working off a 3 year old laptop (Inspiron 9300), which I know is not something to compare *anything* against... but even my Core 2 Duo at work thrashes the hard drive with 4 gigs of RAM installed (granted, it's running Vista 32 bit, so only gets to use...

Hardware RAID the solution for hard drive speed woes?

To those wondering why I would need a big SSD... it's mostly for image post processing. I need to be able to take 300-500 12 meg RAW files at a time and convert them into JPEGs. I figure with a core i7 and lots of RAM, the hard drive is going to be a lot more of a bottleneck than processing...

Hardware RAID the solution for hard drive speed woes?

Reading the Anandtech article now, thanks for the pointer. I'd seen so many articles about problems with SSD that I had just discounted them for now.

Hardware RAID the solution for hard drive speed woes?

CPUs get faster and faster. Memory gets cheaper and cheaper. Hard drives... well, they still suck. 99% of the time when something is slowing down my machine at work or at home, it's because something is thrashing the hard drive. I don't want that to be the limiting factor anymore. SSDs...

World’s Largest Model Rocket Launch Video

Uh, so, at what point does it stop being a model? Could you not say the Discovery is the biggest model rocket in the world (yes, it's a shuttle not a rocket, gimme a break)

Facebook Rejects Funding at $4B Valuation?

Others said it - it's not free money. They'd be getting shares for their money, more shares, same valuation of company, means each share's value goes down. So everyone who worked at the company who has shares would lose value in their shares. The first rule of startups is - only take money...

Teenager Arrested After Posting Nude Pictures on MySpace

How is this a fucking crime? She can go HAVE SEX with 100 other 14 year olds, and that's not a crime, but sending a half naked *picture* of herself to one and suddenly she's a sex offender? Anyone should be able to do whatever they want with pictures of themselves. If they send a picture to...

Sony Charging Publishers Bandwidth Fee for DLC

Also, how much of the developer's profit does Microsoft take vs. Sony? 16 cents on a $10 game (which, if it's a gig, is a hell of a big game) is 1.6%. They probably each take somewhere between 30-70% of the cost of games sold on their services... making that 16 cents pretty damn insignificant.

Sony Charging Publishers Bandwidth Fee for DLC

I don't get it. my $9.99 1 gig DLC costs the makers 16 cents? Big f'n deal. Not exactly breaking the bank. The real problem is demos, since they're free and so often so big. But really, it's not stopping anyone from making paid content, it just explains why there's never any freakin' demos...
