while it seems like you are at the same place you were before, but if you gobbed a lot of thermal paste on there you are doing it wrong, thermal paste is supposed to be spread thin

im assuming you were using a stock HSF, if so which one was it the heat pipe versions or just a aluminum one? that could explain why the temps spiked so fast, but even so not taxing your system that does seem like a big jump in temps... how clean is your current HSF and what is your case...
