Does it give the option to uninstall it?
Edit: Also found an article explaining the normal procedure for updating the hal dll, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/Q234558.
Beyond that I am out of ideas.
In Msconfig under the boot tab click advanced options, in this menu you should see a check box for "detect hal", check it than click ok and reboot. This worked for me when my system lost a core after updating to vista sp1.
Because it's a game they are interested in, games like it are the reason the PS2 was so popular and GameCube/XBOX were not. If MS can get a steady flow of these types of games in Japan than they have a very good chance of taking the console crown from Sony.
What about something like this- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124065 ? Wouldn't it do most of what the Killer NIC claims to do?
If your not dead set on multi channel than I would suggest the Onkyo R805Xt slim stereo receiver. http://www.accessories4less.com/cgi-bin/item/ONKR805XT
I would say it's about half the height of those cube PC cases, maybe even a bit smaller.
Right click Half Life 2 in the Steam games list and select properties, change to the updates tab and select "Do not automaticly update this game" in the drop down menu. You can also try unpluging your internet before launching steam forcing it to run in "offline mode".

As with all new hardware some people will have problems but that is no reason not to give the Xfi a shot and if you do have problems with it the Audigy 2zs is a good second choice.
They support 5.1 through analog out but only stereo via digital, there are exceptions though like DVD's and sound cards that encode all content into a 5.1 digital stream.
I still have a 600c in storage that does that, just gave up and replaced it. I think it's a hardware issue because up until a year or two ago it worked just fine and no amount of software tinkering helped, I also had it on a few different systems over the years.
Guild Wars is pretty much pointless unless you are into player vs player, the story/mission/questing part of the game is rather boring and unrewarding.
I know this is an old topic and I am not sure if the OP got this solved or not but I have a suggestion to make. I too had this issue and it was driving me nuts, there was no disk access or CPU use, no spyware or anything. I finally solved the issue by disabling autoplay in the registry, the key...
