Looking for the best of both words (all-round mouse)

FWIW, I don't plan on going back to Logitech until they fix the microswitch issues. My past 3 high end logitech mice starting double-clicking (or not clicking at all) after about a year or so of average use. Currently on a malfunctioning G500, looking for something else.

    Mouse Enquiry

Don't buy Logitech. I'm on my 3rd and last one (a G500, preceded by a G400). After a few months the button microswitch wears out and you start getting random double-clicks, and you can no longer do simple stuff like dragging and dropping because the button randomly stops registering. Do a quick...

Replacement parts/rig after a PSU blast

It just keeps getting weirder and weirder... I dug up a Antec 500 PSU I forgot I had, hooked it up (just mobo and cpu connectors), and it stayed on! So I figured the Corsair PSU was bad... I put the Corsair back just to check, and it powered on as well! So I start replugging...

Replacement parts/rig after a PSU blast

Both the mobo and cpu power connectors are in place... And the only other PSUs I have around are a very old Enermax 350W that doesn't have compatible connectors, and the Corsair 620 that spilled it's capacitor juices. I guess I'll take it to a computer shop for them to have a look... hope it...

Replacement parts/rig after a PSU blast

Thanks Danny, I'll try that out. I finished the basic assembly, and... the damn thing still won't turn on! I'm starting to wonder if my new PSU is defective? The symptom is that when I hook everything up, and press the power button, the case LED will flash once for a fraction of a second, and...

Replacement parts/rig after a PSU blast

Just got my parts in the mail yesterday, I'm not done reassembling things yet but so far so good. However, I'd like to point out for anyone interested that the CoolerMaster Evo doesn't fit well with the Corsair Ripjaws RAM sticks if you leave the fan in the pusher configuration. With the Asus...

Replacement parts/rig after a PSU blast

Thanks for the input Skillz, much appreciated. I do get paid for my work, though it's something I do on the side as it's not nearly enough to make a living. I'll have some thinking to do as the 3770K is significantly more expensive than the 3570K ($330 vs $230). I see there's a 3770 (not K)...

Replacement parts/rig after a PSU blast

Skillz, with my late rig, something like 5-8 projects per year. A project will keep me busy for 2-4 weeks depending on complexity. If processing times can be reduced appreciably by better specs, I might do more. Not more than 50% of the total time though.

Replacement parts/rig after a PSU blast

Looks like the P8Z77-V LK might be a good candidate. Not sure about how robust it is compared to the more expensive ones. Also, I remember ASUS as being a reliable brand, but from what I read from another thread here at HF looks like their customer service has gone to hell. Just measured my...

What's the oldest piece of hardware still in your possessionand is still used?

A Genius PS/2 keyboard, and a Genius (probably rebranded) 5.1 speaker set, both bought in 2000 (12 years ago), and still in use on my main rig.

Replacement parts/rig after a PSU blast

Thanks guys for the feedback, just back from a weekend away from civilization, will go through your suggestions to check the details. Motley, how's the fan noise out of your NZXT 810? It seems to be designed with both air and water cooling in mind. Everything in life is a compromise, and...

Replacement parts/rig after a PSU blast

About a week ago my 5-year-old HX620W decided to spill it's capacitor juices (luckily, contained in the PSU casing), but after replacing the PSU with a brand new one, it appears my mobo is kaputt as well. So I'm looking into building a new rig. 1) What will you be doing with this PC...

    Mobo replacement: need suggestions

Hi Camaro, Yes, I finally went with the P5Q Pro. Got it from DirectCanada, with shipping and taxes came up to $158 (canadian). Not a bad deal I think. Was a bit of a hassle to install yesterday, although that was mostly my fault. My rig is in a NZXT Hush case, which has plenty of space...

    Mobo replacement: need suggestions

Well, looks like we got a winner! Just looking at the product page in the ASUS website gave me a warm feeling inside... ordered already at directcanada.com, was a tad more than I planned for ($158 with taxes and shipping), but hell, after all I've been through with Gigabyte, if it lets me run...

    Mobo replacement: need suggestions

Hi Camaro28, Just to clarify, this is what I need: -Supports Q6600 -Supports DDR2 running at 1066Mhz (5-5-5-15 is fine). -SATA2 -Good layout (meaning easy access to components - no CMOS jumpers beneath GPUs, able to swap RAM without taking everything apart, hopefully "lots" of space...

    Mobo replacement: need suggestions

Not planning on any major upgrades asides from GPU maybe a year or two down the road... if this current mobo was any good, the original plan was to make the jump to DDR3 when it became affordable, but looks like it won't be worth it anytime soon, so I dropped that requirement.

    Mobo replacement: need suggestions

Seems like a nice board.. though some comments on newegg say it's a microATX board, that might be a problem with the huge 8800GTS! Also, my case ventilation is good but I'm not sure about this board's layout for a not-so-cold soundproofed case. Will investigate. Thanks!

    Mobo replacement: need suggestions

Hello all, I built my current rig a year ago, and been suffering lack of stability ever since. With Vista's nifty memory tester (I know it's not the best around, but it's good enough for detecting more serious problems like what I was getting), I saw that the weird boots or no boots, as well...

    GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R Boot Failure

I just assembled my new rig... with a P35C-DS3R. Initially I had the same problem - no booting, no image on the monitor, and no beeps. Until I finally tried running with only one stick of RAM - I have two Corsair XTC Platinun DDR2-800 5-4-4-15 2Gb sticks. I cycled both of them through all four...

Budget build ($500) Intel vs. AMD

Happy to hear about some hope for the AM2 family... thanks for the tips MrGuvernment, I'll look into them. Although any GPU better than a Geforce2MX is already overkill for stuff like solitaire :D which is as hardcore gaming as my dad's going to get. On the other hand, he really does want...

Upgrading 15-20 years from now? When does it end?

Whoa stop blaming the software developers already... most computer work increases exponentially with problem complexity... up your complexity a notch and suddenly the required calculations increase tenfold. There's a lot that's not transparent to us users, so it's easy to assume that code is...

Budget build ($500) Intel vs. AMD

New parts are all those listed previously, plus PSU. To avoid all the annoying scrolling around, here it is again: target price: ~$500 (canadian) CPU Mobo RAM (2Gb) GPU (only if Mobo doesn't have integrated graphics with DVI-out) PSU The only hitch I see with the AMD config so...

Budget build ($500) Intel vs. AMD

I don't have plans for PSUs yet, just something small and cheap (as in affordable, not flimsy). In other words, nothing fancy (modular, etc), just reliable. As for an X2 3600+, it's $100 cheaper, but even with the 6000+ it's well under his budget (still $130 to go), and the idea being to get the...

Budget build ($500) Intel vs. AMD

Hmm the AMD setup is looking good so far. I forgot to mention the prices are in canadian dollars (and will be shipped to canada). I don't think that OC'ing will be in the picture.

Budget build ($500) Intel vs. AMD

Hello all, I'm helping my dad to select parts for a new PC, and his budget for CPU+Mobo+RAM is about $500. There will be no gaming, just "regular" windows stuff, however he does want DVI-out. Snooping around I came up with a few preliminary configs (all prices in CAN $): Option1: Budget...

New Gaming Rig, need some input

This may sound like a newb question... and it is. The cpu works with an FSB of 1033, why not pick DDR2-1033 RAM as well, instead of 800?

Feedback on my potential new rig

Yes, I plan on using a 64-bit OS (Vista), as long as there are proper drivers for all the hardware (easier said than done). I might consider dual-booting into XP if not. I do a lot of video editing so lots of RAM is always welcome. As for the PSU, I'd rather get as much juice as possible without...

Feedback on my potential new rig

Thanks for pointing that out. The article you suggest doesn't explicitly say that the old FSB relationship between procs and RAM is gone though, unless you already know it (it doesn't even contain the acronym "FSB"). The E6420 is $218 (vs. $187 for the 6000+)... is the extra $30 really worth...

Feedback on my potential new rig

Hooray! My very first post! So... I'd like to read your feedback on the parts I'm considering for my new rig, which will be a medium-high gaming rig. I'm trying to keep the total cost around $1500 canadian. As far as I know the best prices are with directcanada.com, even with shipping (and...
