FS: collection of internal and external HDDs.

I have the best buy warranty for the externals but I couldn't tell you how much time is left, and I don't think they honor it on a resell. The other ones came from newegg, I'll try to get the dates and post it.

Request: Windows 10 Power Options Program - Keep Windows awake when certain programs are open

I'm pretty sure Windows Apps do have their own unique .exe's - I just checked, iheartradio uses an .exe called ClearChannel.View.Exe that opens when it's run and closes as it's exited. So you should be able to add it to process lasso or the other app.

Samsung to Unveil Micro LED TV at CES

Unless you hate image retention. My old TV suffers from image retention like OLED after something is on screen for a few minutes. Completely wipes out the minor benefits when you have to stare at splotches of old crap on the screen while watching a movie. My #1 concern for my new TV was to get...

Physicists Find We're Not Inside Computer Simulator

You could achieve the same results as a simulation by just having nanobots pervasively spread throughout our environment. You could control everything, watch everything, etc. and they could hide themselves from any of our testing equipment I figure.

DPC latency checker lower on SSDs?

As Valnar stated, DPC checker doesn't work on Win 8+. Try this one: http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon - also, the best way to decrease latency (assuming your drivers aren't malfunctioning) is to turn off power saving features in the bios and Windows. Things that lower the clock rate and...

ReFS sucks big time - or reinstalling has lost me access to my files.

If it's not too late, you might want to try booting Win 2016 from a USB stick and press shift-f10 to see if you can access the drives from the Win 2016 command line.

Bill Gates Regrets Control-Alt-Delete Key Command

Not everyone subscribes to such beliefs. What makes them any different than thousands of other businesses that have to shut up shop when they can't compete? Any business that can't diversify when it's not doing hot in its main field deserves what it gets. Look at apple, they're making a killing...

Bill Gates Regrets Control-Alt-Delete Key Command

How often do people even press ctrl-alt-del that this is an issue? Mostly for enterprise log ins and to open task manager when an app has died and you can't access the task bar, that's worth complaining to BG about?

Microsoft Finally Confirms Game Stuttering Problems in Windows 10 Creators Update

I have the X930E, it does not support 4:4:4 at 10 bits either, the bandwidth on HDMI even at 18Gbits isn't there, so I'm sure the X800D doesn't. (for clarity, I am referring to what you get over HDMI, internally they are 4:4:4 but I don't know how you'd ever get that, even blu-rays and UHD...

Microsoft Finally Confirms Game Stuttering Problems in Windows 10 Creators Update

Conspiracy theories are much more fun than boring IT facts unfortunately. I haven't experienced any stuttering except in one game, BF1, don't know if it's related I kinda doubt it, because the battlefront 2 alpha was flawless in this regard, I just think DICE don't give a damn about the game's...

Best x99 mobo around $300 without tons of user complaints? (what's up with all the toasted CPUs?)

X99 has been unlucky for me. Had an Asus x99 deluxe, it died after a few months, got a $500 MSI x99 XPower board, it died after a month and a half, the RMA did not boot, said f*** it and got an Asus X99A/USB 3.1 board, that's worked for about 2 years pretty good. I don't do extreme overclocking...

Gear VR: Intriguing, exciting, disappointing, expensive, immature?

Bobzdar is right, the screen door effect is there, but your brain ignores it when you're immersed and you get so much else out of it. It's like watching your favorite movie in SD, as opposed to some shitty cheap action flick in HD. I just got my rift earlier this week, after playing Arizona...

Want a 4K TV, remembering overscan (Screen Fit) is important.

Thinking of one of the Samsung UHD or SUHD TVs, want 4K, 46" - 50", under $1500, but most importantly, I want it to remember overscan setting (I think Samsung calls it "screen fit" in the TV menu). My current TV, some old JVC, requires that I turn off overscan every time I turn on the TV or the...

Windows 10 Redstone 2 Will Be Released In April

Even if Packet sniffers are not useful, there are armies of hackers debugging and decompiling Windows code for various reason, and yet crickets on that front. Because it is absolutely boring shit, it's just another silly thing for the concern trolls to whack MS over the head with. If MS went...

Windows 10 Redstone 2 Will Be Released In April

I can see the "logic" here, really, however, with all the people with packet sniffers on their networks, etc. not reporting anything big, I'm more inclined to believe the EULA is a blanket CYA just *in case* it accidentally happens here and there, and/or maybe for things like interactive tech...

Windows 10 Redstone 2 Will Be Released In April

I've used all the Windows OSes, and I really do try to keep an open mind, but as far as I can tell, the reason 8/10 are hated is because the internet mob beats down any one who doesn't absolutely hate Windows. And it seems to me, that the better Windows gets, the more they attack it on trifling...

What would get you to switch to linux from windows?

I said UAC is not a security boundary in the technical policy definition sense of the word. Anyways seems a moot point, if you want process isolation of that nature, then use a standard user account and log out and use an admin account when necessary, etc. I think the context of this, is are...

What would get you to switch to linux from windows?

Mark is talking about a MS policy, not the security of the system. Security Boundary just means MS is obligated to fix any potential flaw. For 99% of uses, UAC is equivalent to Standard User. I think there are edge cases when you elevate an app and it loads libraries from the user profile...

What would get you to switch to linux from windows?

It's a small world, with all the hacks and whistle blowers, if MS was specifically trying to gather that info to use for some nefarious reason, we'd know about it. It's simply a side effect of the process of investigating crashes. I mean really, that's what we're worried about, some personal...

What would get you to switch to linux from windows?

Doesn't seem to help, Linux still has lots of vulnerabilities discovered each year. For most people they lose apps/games and ease of use, for non-existent security and privacy. Windows has all the same security features that other OS's have, like DEP, ASLR, user/super user seperation and...

What would get you to switch to linux from windows?

You over estimate noobs, the only thing they'll be thinking about when typing sudo and entering a password after they've done it a bunch of times, is "goddamn microsoft for making me wait for an mp3 (or porn or warez)". Such actions become automatic when you've done them a few times. They will...

What would get you to switch to linux from windows?

OK, so should I switch to the most rarely used OS ever then? And again this is a fallacy, because if everyone switches then that OS will be targeted and it will be no different. Linux can get away with that because it is mostly used by techies. Having to mark a file as executable is something...

What would get you to switch to linux from windows?

You answered your own question, if it has huge security holes as you put it then it still doesn't have enough market share to attract the scumbags. Think about it, you're a malware writer, out of every 1,000 machines, 15 are Linux, 50 are Macs, and 900 are Windows, which one would you target for...

What would get you to switch to linux from windows?

Most Linux advocates do want that, and it seems weird to me, how many users should switch to linux then? If it's any non-trivial number, the result will be the same. And I can appreciate there are generalizations about Linux that aren't true, but to me it seems Linux is built on a mountain of...
