    Bugography 2010

... and that looks like it for 2010. Perhaps not the most productive summer (been awful windy last couple of years) but I think I got a few good ones.

Thanks I use a remote mounted, diffused SB900 on an RRS bracket like this (SB800 in this photo): It also acts as the master to wirelessly control two SB800s that I use to light the background:

Some detail of Mama Wolf's babies: I think next time I find a wolf like this I am going to go extra close and try and get a "hemisphere" (that aughta creep out the arachnophobes) Waterstriders are incredibly difficult to get a photo of. I have yet to get a pic I am really happy with...

The difference between 'cheap' and 'expensive' lens filters

Better yet, fold that $10 and put it back in your pocket. The sensor is not affected by UV light like film would have been. Why add an extra layer of cheap, flat glass to shoot through? If you are concerned about "protection", keep your lens cap on when not in use and use your hood at other...

    Bugography 2010

Thanks guys. Glad you're enjoying them. It is actually kind of cool to have these images to work on mid-winter.

Processed a few more today. I'm in to July now, BTW Some of you may remember the mama wolf a couple of years back. Here is another:

    Bugography 2010

Thanks. These are all taken with a D2X and a Nikkor 200mm f4 except for the aphids which was with a Tamron 90mm plus 68mm additional extension. I don't remember all the details now but they will be mostly handheld or with a monopod. The aphids were likely with a tripod and focus rail.

    Bugography 2010

2010 was an extremely busy year for me. Even though I did get out most weekends to capture my images, I never had the oppertunity to process any of them until now. Many more to follow!

Scenes from The Turks and Caicos Islands

Thanks guys. Glad you're enjoying them! Day 7 - Saturday Feb 12 Well, all good things must come to an end and Saturday was our last day. As usual in the morning, I am drawn to the ocean: As I was walking along the boardwalk, this little fellow popped up...

Scenes from The Turks and Caicos Islands

Day 6 - Friday, Feb 11 These little egrets were quite bold and would let you get easily within ten feet of them. They would quite often be seen staring intensely into the bushes and then would wiggle their butts before launching forward and grabbing one of the little...

Scenes from The Turks and Caicos Islands

Thanks. Yeah, it was a good time to be sure! Day 5: Thursday Feb 10 Couple of resort shots on my morning walk: That day we headed out on another cruise. The first stop was over a reef for some snorkling. I had never done this before and let me tell you, next year there is...

Scenes from The Turks and Caicos Islands

After an extremely hectic and stressful year, it was time to sit in the sun and recharge my batteries. This year we headed to the Beaches Resort in the British West Indies. Wow - what a place! The luxury was staggering. Here are some photos from the resort and surrounds. These are in...

What lens spends the most time on your camera?

Most of the time I have the 28-70f2.8 on the D3 and the 200mmf4 on the D2X.

A New Camera - Sony Alpha?

I run a Motorola Two Way Radio shop in Northern Ontario. I'm afraid I only hire locally. Speaking of Northern Ontario, we had a rather unusual January 1st this year that saw the majority of our snow melt off. So, my buddy Jim and I decided to take the oppertunity to go for the first ride of...

A New Camera - Sony Alpha?

Well, the lenses are all collar mounted so I don't think stability is going to be much of an issue.

A New Camera - Sony Alpha?

You know, at first I was thinking "why the hell would anyone want to do that?" and now I'm thinking it might make some interesting isolation effects with the longer lenses. Its not very expensive, I may give it a try some day.

A New Camera - Sony Alpha?

I have never used the little NEX for video - probably never will. I mostly use it like a medium format, shooting from waist level looking down at the LCD. I keep it in "nearest subject" AF mode in aperture priority. So far, I have only used the 16mm f2.8. It is certainly not the best...

A New Camera - Sony Alpha?

Since we had some dramatic cloud cover this morning, I decided to stop at a couple of points along my route and get a few pictures: This is turning up past the old Ankerite headframe: Looking down the mine rock path. My buddy Jim figures this is what is chewing up my Mefos...

All controls are accessed through menus so its pretty clunky in that regard. Mostly though I am just adjusting the aperture and that is through the little spinner.

A New Camera - Sony Alpha?

Although I intend to use this camera mostly with the wide angle prime, I decided that a little more versitility is also required (impossible to isolate anything at 16mm) This is the 18-200 OSS. I'm not normally a fan of super zooms but I think I can make an exception for this particular...

A New Camera - Sony Alpha?

My RRS camera plate came in today: So now I can use the little NEX with my tripod systems. Although severe overkill, the little groundpod is small enough to pack along: . I didn't want 0055 to be disappointed again so please note the custom white balance .

A New Camera - Sony Alpha?

Actually, I am a Nikon shooter with a trio of pro-sized bodies. I bought this little guy specifically for its size to carry on a motorcycle. Honestly, I am not surprised how well it works. I chose it based on its sensor size.

Its ISO performance is actually pretty impressive. This is at ISO3200 100% crop There is also an 18-45mm available but I am not interested. I always go wide angle when getting pics from adventure riding. There is an 18-200mm to be available soon that I may consider for a...

A New Camera - Sony Alpha?

There is a thread title I never thought I'd type! Surely enough though, I have purchased a Sony Alpha camera. It was on August 13th at about 7:30am that a moment's hesitation was decided by my motorcycle when it opted to lie down while I figured out what I wanted to do: The bike...
