there are a couple of reviews that love it. a couple of others that went meh, and no H review on it. Has anybody bought the card and seen an improvement?

Yeah I'm wondering the same thing. I was wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade my 9800GT to get the 4870 1gb. I play games at 1680x1050 and would like to play with max AA and AF...

Diamond is getting agresive with their prices due to that biz with the 3800s. right now they are offering rebates on the 4870X2 as well. its down to 450. (where it should be)

Many of the new games are using more than 800mb of vram. This is especially true at 1920x1200 but Clear Sky, Crysis, Warhead can use even more than that! Sometimes more than 1GB! So now we need a 1.5 gb card lol.

Not really. 1Gb is cool.

I do recall playing Max Payne 2 and it saying I need 768mb of vram for the settings I wanted. Obviously, that did not happen back then.

I remember reading that the 4850 1GB doesn't improve much and actually can perform worse but the 4870 1GB has better FPS, especially on higher res.

It's funny how the 3 Diamond HD 4870 are all the same price after rebates.
512mb, 512mb OC, and 1GB

Yup. I read that too. Looking for where I read it so I can go over it again. I am buying a new gpu next month and better get it right the first time. Leaning toward the Sapphire 4870 1Gb heavy now that it is under $300.

I think that the 1gb is more of an insurance policy if games like clear sky and crysis are any indication. Looks like we will be needing more vram for textures in the future. 512mb just will not cut it in a few months if you are gaming with AA on at higher resolutions.

I think that was because the memory was slower on that 1gig 4850 in that review.

Here is a review but the 4870 1gb in this review has overclocked core so decide for yourself. Why cant we get a review with matching core and memory clocks? Crysis seems to be the only current game in this test but Clear Sky, Warhead and others will benefit having more than 512mb on the 4850 too.

"Again, that's not bad at all, we are using an extremely heavy on the GPU scene here. It's funny to see that Crysis is framebuffer limited, with 1 GB memory it performing better than the 4870 with 512MB until you hit GPU limitation in the highest resolutions."

I have a 4870 512, at 1680x1050 I'm wondering if the 1gb will make much of a difference at that resolution?

Not really. Looks like 1920x1200 and up is where the difference is. Maybe in like a year that will change but except for Crysis, Clear Sky, and other super texture heavy games, no change.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 (3166MHz) + Gigabyte HD 4870 1GB in 3D Mark Vantage trial:

"P8090 3DMarks
CPU Score: 6368
Graphics Score: 8891

As usual, I find myself at the low end of the scale.

What happened with games having built-in benchmarks? Not feeling that "3D Mark" love, really.

I would just run fraps in whatever games you play.

Not 100% repeatable in gameplay. Not comparable across users. Too much like work.

Cool thanks, always good to have a second opinion.
