Can I safely remove the heat spreader?

Hehe 9-9-9-24 is considered "low latency"... sad sad sad.

Anyhow.. they are probably just stuck on there with some dual sided sticky stuff.

Why would you want to?

Probably for watercooling. It would not be worth it though, as WC isn't needed to keep RAM cool enough for operation. If that's what the OP intends, I'd suggest just leaving the heatspreader on and place a nice intake fan so the memory modules are directly in the path of the intake.

Yeah, I was thinking about WCing the ram. I'm going for a decent OC and figured the extra cooling couldn't hurt. But if there is no need then I wont, thx!

In general, DDR3 is running cooler than DDR2 so my vote is for a fan also. A nice quiet fan and good case airflow and you should be good to go.

Why would it void your warranty if you put a fan to cool the ram? Get the Antec spot cool its a nice way to cool your ram, and watercooling it is just a waste of money.

the antec spot cool:

Single Waterblock to cool separate ram sticks:

Waterblock to cool 2 adjacent ram sticks:

Your choice.
If you use the antec spot cool you won't void your warranty.

Failure to remove the heat sinks the right way to put on a wateblock will void your warranty. If that happens you just lost RAM, your money, and your time.

The benefits of water cooling DDR3 would be pretty minimal over a decent active air cooling solution. Leave the sinks and blow some air across them.

it won't or will it void the warranty? i thought it will void your warranty if you take them off.

Yes it WILL void the warranty to take off the HS, but adding a fan won't.

Why would it void your warranty if you put a fan to cool the ram?...

....Failure to remove the heat sinks the right way to put on a wateblock will void your warranty

It won't, but removing the HS will. You also risk damaging your RAM in the process, all for little or no gain. It also doesn't matter how you take off the HS there is no "right way" to the manufacturer, it will void the warranty no matter what.

Read the entire post. It's a +1 for using a fan. He's saying using a fan WON'T void the warranty. Obviously, removing the spreaders will.

Indeed! :D

+2 for just adding a fan.. also there was a thread here before about taking HS off and while pulling the HS off the memory chip came off with the HS.
