IPS panels and "slower" games..

I know TN panels are usually the best for games due to the fact there is little to no input lag and ghosting, but how would an IPS panel do with regards to other types of games like simulators? Most of my gaming revolves around flight simulators (MS Flight Sim, Lock On, DCS: Blackshark) with a few FPS's tossed in for variety.

Would an IPS panel be ok for the type of gaming I do?

The past week and a half I have tried a few monitors (Hannspree 27.5' and Samsung T240) and while I liked the overall picture of both, the viewing angles were just really nagging me (especially on the T240 since it isn't adjustable). I have been considering an IPS panel but am worried about the input lag and ghosting I keep reading about.

Opinions/comments?

Thanks!

1. Mind the difference between panels and monitors.
2. Keep reading? Ghosting? Where?

MULTIMEDIA (good for all-around multimedia use, movies/regular gaming)
- Low response time
- Accurate color/gamma curve
- High contrast
- Wide viewing angle

As you see the first 6 recommendations are IPS monitors.

A IPS can keep up perfectly in responsetime to a TN.

There are plenty zero-lag IPS monitors. Look at the LG W2600HP for example.

So, the only advantage TN has, is it's price.

Some of the lowest input lag monitors are IPS such as Planar PX2611W, Dell 3007WFP, HP LP3065.

TN only has the lowest rated response time down to 2ms.

HP LP2475W would make a very good gaming screen, even though it's made by HP's business division. Take a look at the appropriate thread.

I use my HP LP2475w for some fast online shooters a few hours a week (working the rest of the time) and have no problems whatsoever.

Panel type has quite little to do with input lag. Its the technology behind the panel that causes it. There are very low inputlag IPS and *VA screens as there are high input lag TNs.

Also the rated ms response time is often load of crap. 6ms IPS paneled NEC 20WGX2 is still one of the fastest screens (ie as nonexistent ghosting or trailing as possible with LCDs), equaling and even besting many so-called 2ms TNs. Only reason why so inferior TN dominates now is its low manufacturing price.

Yeah, LP2475W is quite good gaming monitor. Its only problems are inverse ghosting (not well adjusted overdrive?) and oversaturated colors in sRGB material (pretty much everything that is). It also has some input lag, average from 1,5 to 2 frames but thats quite low.

I have a NEC LCD2690WUXi which I use for gaming. The only time I saw ghosting was when I was playing Vampire The Masquerade. There was basically a black box sitting on a table in front of a window that had white light shining though. When strafing I can definitely tell there was ghosting while looking at the box.

That's basically about the worst scenario you can have in terms of ghosting. Even a TN panel would show ghosting under those circumstances.

If I remember correctly, the average input lag for the LCD2690WUXi is 28ms - 30ms. Not the lowest (14ms for a Hazro 24" TN panel [Europe only]), but certainly not the highest.

1. LCD Monitor/Panel/etc.. it's the same thing.
2. Ghosting/Input lag/etc/.. they all go in the "suck" category I am used to using a CRT and have never really owned an LCD longer than a week or so. All of this terminolgy is new to me. :)

Thanks for the links to the videos and the panel rewcommendations. I have been eyeing that HP screen. It seems like a pretty good value for an IPS panel. :)

1. LCD Monitor/Panel/etc.. it's the same thing.

Not really, look at the Dell Panel Lottery(tm) - same monitor model, different panel inside.

The panel is a discrete part that's purchased by the monitor manufacturer to put inside, the supporting electronics etc AND the panel make up a monitor.

All LCD monitors have some ghosting, but LCD technology has advanced to the point where most people are not bothered by it anymore, regardless of panel type. The only exception is when overdrive is implemented badly, which causes inverse ghosting. That hasn't been a significant problem with IPS monitors.

As for lag, if you get the Planar PX2611W, you won't have to worry about lag at all.

wow my monitor made the cut very impressive considering i got it for 300 bucks a fraction of the cost of the 1200 winner.

Very nice information.

Viewing angle is very important to me since I am not always sitting directly in front of my monitor. That IPS HP might be a viable option. I wish more retail stores carried LCDs with IPS displays. I cringe at the idea of having UPS ship me a panel.

I use my NEC 2490Wuxi (ips) for gaming. I have never noticed any ghosting/lag.

As for worrying about having your screen shipped:
Just order from a reputable company....They will replace it if any damage occurs.
(I would recommend Monitor Outlet, I had a problem with my screen and they were very helpful)

Thanks for the recommendation, Liight. Much appreciated.
