Join the Alliance -- the Socket 939 Alliance!

Thanks for the input, I have yet to try OCing on the 64 chips. I've just been to lazy to test my memory (CH-5 Kingston Hyper X) and deal with HTT and all those number and such.

Here's the plain and simple of it. First, at 2.8V or so, UTT CH5 basically does 218-219 @ 2-3-3-5 timings or so with only very little variance (for example, I got 2-3-2-5 with otherwise the same results.) HTT really isn't hard. Just keep it around 800+ and you should be ok. Just don't forget to lower it when raising your FSB if it would go any significant amount over 1GHz (you can usually get away with small amounts like 1008 or something, but, something like 1200 would be seriously pushing it and probably won't boot.) Try to avoid going lower than 800 if you at all can as you may hurt yourself more by letting it go lower than 800 than from raising your CPU or memory some small amount. From there, just bump the CPU up maybe +0.125 for starters and see where it takes you. (Easiest way is to probably underclock the memory and CPU first, find a suitable FSB that boots and seems stable in Prime95 for more than an hour, clock the CPU up to see where it should go, find its optimal area, then do the same with the memory. You may have to try a few different comboes to get cpu and memory in their optimal positions, but, you already have a basic idea what you can expect from each.)

EDIT: Sorry, guess I'm getting a little too much off topic here. Just wanted to help see a fellow S939 user get the most they can out of their setup. d-:

Well, in theory it's not entirely a downgrade. You've gone from a 2.2GHz chip with 1MiB of L2 cache to a 2.0GHz chip with 512KiB of L2 cache. Your HyperTransport has gone up from 800MHz stock to 1GHz stock, which probably makes no real difference, but, more importantly, the newer memory controller in the Venice supports dual channel which may just make a significant difference in things like loading. I still think more than anything else you are getting the benefits of the clean install, but, dual channel is nothing to sneeze at.

Once you start overclocking though, that venice may just come out ahead if you are lucky. For one thing, I think they are supposed to go up to 2.4GHz in even the worst ones when you start overclocking. And, of course, due to the smaller process, Venice runs pretty cool for the most part, so it should be easy to work with. I suppose you've also even got the benefit of a few newer instructions like SSE3, though the actual real life usefulness of things like SSE3 is a bit in doubt.

Unless you do a lot of encoding, you won't really notice the decrease in L2 cache size. In games and such, I think you are looking at 2-8% difference between the same clocked same chips where one has more L2, and it's probably more often 2% than 8%. If you can run yours at 2.4GHz, games are going to run nice and smoothly though. Even 2.2GHz is enough for most games, though a lot of newer ones like Oblivion really need the 2.4GHz I think.

Good points; I agree w/ your evaluation. From a thorough benchmark report I read about a year or so ago, the extra cache didn't improve performance much at all, all else equal. It was about a 2-3% improvement in various benchmarks (including games and encoding).

Again, good stuff. Would it be helpful for that guy (CRXican) to first loosen his memory's timing, so that he can achieve more OCability? 2-3-2-5 is awfully difficult to OC.

Well, when testing, yes. I'm just saying that chances are you will get 2-3-3-5 with UTT CH5 at 2.8V. There are exceptions, but, typically this is what you're looking at at normal voltages. But, yes, start low and work your way up.

Traitor!

Its been a month since the last post. Surely there must be something to talk about in the world of 939ness.

I've posted before, but I wasn't added to teh list :(

I'm using a 3500+, and hoping to upgrade to an Opty in the new year. Long live s939!

This thread... it's dead, Jim.

;D

Someone who's jumped ship for Conroe, send me your old X2 939 plz. I'll pay for this shipping. Thanks.

Yea. AMD's abandoned 939. Kinda sad, it's really the RAM makers fault. Stupid forcing DDR2...

Alright [H]unter, I've been thinking real hard ever since you started this thread about joining the S939 Alliance and I believe I'm finally ready to take that step now. So, here goes:

May I please join your club?

i have an opty 165 on order to upgrade my 3200+, im gonna oc that and sit on it for a while.

Woot! I moved from skt 478, yet my print server is still on 754!!!! Hmm guess I gotta join the skt 754 club too....

I just joined the 939 alliance.. lol. My 754 MSI K8N Neo Platinum died. =(((( I just stuck with a 3400+ venice since it was only $50 on the egg last week. I use it for my torrent machine. No overclocks or anything. See sig for specs.

Yup. Crank out a few overclocked x2 4800+s as s939 x2 5200+s and price em at E6300 prices... and I'll still be a customer.

Otherwise if I have to switch to DDR2, I might as well go Intel.

I'm running 2 s939 systems. :)

Main Rig
Thermaltake Soprano (silver)
A64 3000+ (just bought a x2 4800+ to replace it)
gigabyte GA K8NF9 (to be replaced with an SLI foxconn)
gig of kingmax ram
coolmax 500w
evga 7800gt co

HTPC
CM Media 260 slimline (black)
A64 3200+
Foxconn mATX 8EKRS
gig of patriot signature
enermax liberty modular 400w
evga 7600gs (passively cooled)

w000t for 939!

Damn, I'm late. Did I miss anything?? ;) :D

J/K'ing. Been hanging with 939 for about a year.

Its time for me to jump on the 939 bandwagon...

Ohh wait, I've been on it for a couple of years. Thought I would post some specs and plans.

Current Rig: Dual Opteron 244 (PIB), Tyan S2875, 1GB Crucial PC3200 ECC Reg Memory, XFX GeForce 6800 (AGP Baby, Yeah!), Maxtor Raptor 74GB & Seagate 160 GB. All this beauty wrapped in a nice Antec 4U Rackmount case... mmm mmm mmm.

System has been running rock solid now for about 2 years. No system instabilities, no re-installs. The system just works. But, its getting old and I'm thinking an upgrade is in order. I want to dump an extra GB of memory into it as well as a few extra HDD's, then I think this box will become my new FAH Rig as well as Samba Server and test LAMP Server (Weee).

As for a new box, I've been heavily thinking about building an Opty 165 before they are all gone. I think the Fiance will get the 165 on a Biostar T-Force mATX and then I'm sadly going to switch over the AM2 1210 on an ABIT mATX.

ill jump in

A64 3700 @ 2.6GHz
1GB Samsung DDR400
ATI x1600PRO 512MB DDR2 545/445
FICKTBC51G Nvidia 430 chipset
HIPRO 500W PSU

Had this system for o about 8 months then built a new one a ASUS screwed me over

I'll join the alliance, as well.

A64 X2 4400 @ 2.38ghz
2GB g.skill hz 2.5-3-3-8 @ 217mhz
ASUS A8R32-MVP
ATI X1950XTX
Enermax Liberty 500w

For my system, s939 is completely fine, no point in going to DDR2 and AM2 with neglible performance difference. I don't upgrade every few months, so new RAM in a year or more, is fine with me.

I'll jump in here. Sig rig is my current undertaking and I think it will do me for some time to come. Need new memory to get over that 3Ghz hump. Went from 3000+ venice to my opty 165. I love lil' opty.

Can I just put this Opteron 185 on my A8N-SLI?

Can ASUS A8N-SLI series motherboard support socket 939 E4 & E6 stepping AMD Opteron CPU?
On the Asus FAQ:

Not the E6300 E6400 but the E6600 realy kicks ass!

E6300/E6400 is No option!
FX60 is same CPU as Opteron 185 See: http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=475&model2=433&chart=193

If you read my story
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1135917

You see that a E6400 is like a Opteron 185 Overclocked to 2,9 so to do realy business you have to get the E6600 but that realy is expensive comming from a s939 platform.

If I put the Opteron 185 in I loose € 440,- with a complete new E6600 platform at least € 600,- or somthing....the DDR2 is expensive and a good mobo also.

Example:
€ 160,- Asus P5B Deluxe, P965
€ 280,- E6600
€ 184,- 512MB x 2 (1GB) PC8000 DDR2 CL4 (Mushkin, 996524).
______________________________ ___________________________
€ 624,-

440,- AMD Opteron 185 ( S939, 2x2.6Ghz, 2MB, 400MHz Bus, 110W, Boxed)
450,- AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 (S939, 2x2.6GHz, 1MB, 400MHz Bus, 110W,...

280,- Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (S775, 2x2.4GHz, 4MB, 1066MHz FSB, Boxed)
160,- Asus P5B Deluxe, P965 (ATX, PCI-e, Sound, LAN, SATA II, RAID,
__________________________________________________________
440,- Exactly funny enough!

So the DDR2 Ram is realy the bottleneck! If I could find me some cheap 1Gig DDR2 :(

I'll semi join...I have an opty 165 sitting in its box =[

I need a mobo, still debating over a dft nf4 expert or the asus a8n32sli.
