Project: "Huge Big Tower Thing"

Well I mean something about the right size that will do a huge amount of airflow.

Get a radiator fan from a car. They run on DC power, most are 24volt though, might have to finger start it. :D

Actually, most automotive radiator fans work on 12V ( unless you guys use 24 batteries on the other side of the atlantic )

the thing is, the pull much more wattage than 120mm fans ... thus, be careful when powing it, use a strong PSU, and don't forget to protect it agains surges.

also, do NOT use metal bladed fans, sice whey produce magnetical fields ... which is not really electronics-friendly :D

Got my 3.5" silver fanbus and 2nd red LED fan in the mail yesterday.
Off to a booze/porn party tonight, so I might not be in a condition to work on the panel tomorrow. But we'll see.

It needs lots of flashing lights. You should call it Ziggy! *has a 1980/90's flashback*

The possibilities are endless. So beautiful. . . Too bad Antec doesn't sell these bad boys. But how much do you think shipping would be for a 136 pound "case"?

Last night and tonight was dedicated to the control panel. I had to drill drill drill and Dremel Dremel Dremel. Everything fits perfect. One toggle switch is slightly off alignment...I could attempt to fix it, but it's minor in the grand scheme of things. The taped off rectangle in the bottom centre is for the 3.5" fan controller, and I'll cut that out tomorrow.

maybe you could bring that into a geeks birthday party and then have a stripper pop out of it

i have never dreamed of something like this before, looks awesome :D

the first computers were all 'walk-in'. :p

yeah d00d, h4X0r t3h 61bs0n!

all making fun of a horrible movie aside, that sounds likea cool idea, good luck with it!

Ooooh idea: mod an lcd into the tower (or clip it onto the side or something like that ;)) and buy a switcher so you can plug all the computers, dvd players, video game systems you will ever need into that tower. But thats more of a space saver idea.

More than just a space saver, it now becomes a totally independent mobile unit!

errrr....on 2nd thought...maybe not THAT mobile.

With a fresh pack of cutting discs, a repaired Dremel, a 6-pack of Tuborg, and the wife out for the day, I'm cracking open that beast today. Watch for an update tonight.

hehe...
yeah, that wife does get in the way... :p
much easier to cut and grind without her nagging at you to do something productive :D

Some wheels... nah, wheels are too common.
Tank tracks!!!! Robotic legs!!! Hovercraft!!!

I'd like to know also... heh That will be awsome when complete.

From the first post....
Don't get caught up drooling at the pics,
try reading the text AFTER the pics.... :D

It was a clothing/accessories unit that Reebok put into select SportChek stores for some NBA promotion. We called their rep to come pick them up when the promotion ended but she told us to just throw em out. We had 4, but I saved one.

Entire thing weighed in (on the bathroom scale) at a whopping 136 pounds. This is the ultimate anti-LAN case. :)

make it look like the gibson from hackers lol

it looks just like one of the "servers"

and then imagine all the lame geek jokes at lan parties "OMG DUDE IM HAX0RING UR GIBSON GIVE IT A FLU SHOT"

ahaha i crack myself up...

anyway... carry on :p

we are gonna have enough fun getting the thing cooled sufficiently without blowing something.. much less making it float on a cushion of air

And I'm done for the night. Tomorrow I'll grind down the edges to smooth them out, and cut the control panel to fit in the fan controller.

Ouch that is taking a long time to cut through. Are you planning to cut the place for the control panel with cutting disks as well?

might i suggest some fiberglass reinforced cut off wheels. they are alittle more expensive, but well worth it for large (harder) cuts.

I realy like the control pannel on there, cant wait to see this beast up and running.

JEEVES

ps, you have to put the printer in there, that would just be bad ass.

Is it just me, or are alot of those "used" cutoff wheels not used? I agree, i <3 my reinforced dremel cutoffs. They can even handle my POOR dremeling skillz.

the printer will be AWESOME!!!

They ARE used. I had to cut the seams on an angle, and certain depth, so the wheels got to a small-enough diameter where they became useless and I had to change them.

Hey he should put it on tracks, like on the mythbusters show, with the 7up machine on tracks or something like that.

Very small update tonight. Brought some more stuff home from work, mainly baskets and shelves that fit into the slots of the tower case, some large triangular brackets that I'm going to use for mounting optical drives on the inside, and stopped by Canadian Tire for some supplies. Also picked up a cd-rom drive from Active Surplus (awesome place for anything electronic) for a mere $3.95. Not sure of it *works works*, but it powers up fine and the tray opens/closes. Got it merely for measuring and testing the relocated momentary switches in the control panel. Did that tonight, everything works great.

What you see here is a Laser LED Strobe light. Also bought at Active Surplus. 25 bucks. Hurts the eyes to stare at it directly, and I wouldnt recommend an epileptic from EVER purchasing it, but it will add great effect to the case.

It plugs into a wall socket via an adapter, uses 14V DC and draws 300 milliamperes. Now I know jack shit about electricity, but if anyone who reads this DOES, would it be possible to run this on a 12V line from my PSU? By the time this project is done, I'll need 10 plugs just to power everything. I dont want an 11th!

Help! Anyone?

It SHOULD be able to run off of 12V..... the fact that it needs 14V seems a bit odd but it probably could run off of 12- probably be a bit more dim. It's hard to say w/o seeing a schematic and/or the innerds....

You're fine undervolting LEDs themselves, the logic chip is the only thing that could give you problems, though I find that unlikely at such a small difference in voltage. I'll give it a Probably Functional.

OK so I have a 4.5 inch angle grinder on loan til Xmas, and I just finished doing the edges tonight. I'm having a smoke break and will go over the edges with a sanding block to remove all the tiny burrs that are guaranteed to become annoying slivers in either my fingers, or the cats' paws. I got about half an hour til WWE RAW is on, so I'll post pics after 11pm eastern time. Back to work now.

Grinding:

Ran my sanding block on all 4 pieces. Done.

Also cut the control panel to fit the fan controller, but didnt take a pic. Still have to smooth out the edges on it.

Tomorrow I'll drill and attach the hinges and whatever else I can think of.
