I think game studios and editors are going about the problem in a wrong way altogether. The market model being followed is mostly the same that has been around since the days before digital mediums and digital distribution.
I believe the key point here is that piracy isn't going anywhere...
I'm in the same boat as you are. Will be buying a new card around September.
At this point, for all I've seen the GTX 260 looks like the way to go. The 4870X2 might make me rethink that however.
They're just different types of games. HL2 is a linear FPS while Crysis is a sandbox FPS.
A Linear FPS sets you on rails but makes it much easier to deliver a cinematic and engaging experience (and I'd say COD4 is the best example on how to do this)
A Sandbox FPS puts all the freedom in...
A Couple spring to mind.
My first deathmatch ever, was with two computers hooked up through a serial cable playing Doom2 for about 8 hours non stop on the 1st level. After a few hours we knew the level so well we could pinpoint the other's location just by the light coming out from the monitor...
I'm gonna go against the tide here, but I really prefer NWN2 to NWN1.
Storywise, both are pretty linear so don't bother with them if that's not your cup of tea. I myself prefer a linear story with some depth and developed NPCs, to a freeform world full of generic subquests and NPCs...
I don't like the WASD setup either because of the offset keys (I also have long fingers)
I just use the numeric keypad. Aligned keys and plenty of keys around the basic movement ones to cover every possible function. A 5 button mouse also helps.
If you had twin 7950's on SLI what were you expecting? 2 minutes in google would have shown you that a single 8800GTS will not beat that rig.
To tell you the truth at 1280x1024 those 7950's aren't even breaking a sweat and it's not like there are any DX10 games around. I'd say return the 8800...
After reading this whole thread I really cannot agree with you crashaman. Here's why:
- There is a reason why business critical applications aren't usually bleeding edge technology. It's not stable or tested. By your argument it appears gaming is 'business critical' to you. So you really have...
Here's a good one: http://www.webactivemagazine.co.uk/whatpc/features/2132874/2d-3d-graphics-cards-windows-accelerators
has some good pearls like "Today's PCs run graphically-rich operating systems like Windows 95"
really depends on which games you play and at which resolution you'll be playing them. If it's 1600x1200 or higher you'll be hard pressed to bottleneck your system at the CPU level without resorting to some kind of high end SLI / Crosssfire setup.
I had a setup like that with some friends (4 computers in all). It was actually a network connection, except that it was daisy chained instead of everybody connecting to a HUB/Switch. The computers on each end of the chain had to have special terminators. Just getting all computers to see each...
Except that in Windows it's a 2D environment and a FPS is a 3D environment.
Imagine you're holding a gun in your hand and you want to shoot somehting on top of a tree. Remember that while playing and FPS you don't really use your shoulder as lifting the mouse from the table doesn't quite...
er... no. There is only one kind of light. Different frequencies give you different colors. Too high a frequency and you can't see them anymore (UV), too low and you can't see them again (IR).
What can hurt your eyes is the flickering, intensity or being out of focus. And it's not due to...
analog movement has little advantages. The only real advantage might be to dodge shots that have do not have instantaneous travel times (i.e. rockets). Otherwise you will always want to be moving at full speed. As long as it's not in a straight line it makes aiming at you harder (reversing...
Actually I'd rather that when my sound chip fails, I don't have to send the whole motherboard for repair and risk being without a computer for a few weeks. Given the option, at the same price, I always prefer modularity to having everything integrated in the same board. As for conflicts, haven't...
Good article. I had the distinct impression that passing data from the GPU back to the game engine wouldn't be feasible in the current generations.
All in all seems all options are open at the moment, but until there is a common and measurable way to compare performance on both solutions it...
Here's some of the games I think have either been absolutely groundbreaking in their time or are otherwise what I view as being the best of what the genre has to offer (in more or less chronological order):
Lords of Midnight (ZX Spectrum)
Rebelstar Raiders (ZX Spectrum)
Elite (ZX Spectrum)...
Your best bet will be using S3 standby mode. It appears your computer is going to S1 mode as it's keeping the fans on. S3 mode will shut off the fans and still be able wake up quickly. Hardware support for S3 mode however may be tricky on older computers. Failing that your best bet will be using...
It's really not relevant as I'm asking about a TV card feature not how to illegaly descramble a channel, but for the record it's a cable company supplied box.
I was wandering if it's possible to connect the HTPC to a cable descrambler.
The way it works on a regular tv is by connecting the descrambler to the TV through a scart cable. Can I do the same in the Hauppauge card, by using a SVHS to Scart converter?
in over 20 years of gaming no game ever gave me the urge to kill anyone. Can't say the same about this review. It's my opinion that satan himself wrote this review after being pissed at his friends getting their asses kicked and used the reviewer to post it. I think the reviewer should be locked...
Same old debate. I have no doubt that there are indeed crimes to be blamed on violent video games. Problem is for someone to be influenced by videogames to that level then it's either because they have little contact with the world outside videogames (blame the parents for a lousy education)...
