Well I had been wanting to do another PC Mod for some time, when an IMac
G3 landed on my desk. A buddy of mine had just bought the Mac Mini, and I
had already expressed interest in his G3 in the past.

After taking some measurements, and doing a little research, I have decided
to turn the IMac into a PC. I will be using my old Shop machine for this mod
because the parts are there and free :D They are Junk componets, but I will
replace them with an AMD 64 later....

This project will Likely take me a few weeks to complete because I have like
30 mins a day to put on it. But it will be fun to watch I think none the less :D

ATM I am awaiting approval for a free website, but I am not sure if I am going to
get it or not. I need something with PHP no ads no pop ups and at least 100
megs of space, if anyone knows of something.

The G3 IMac is of coarse the Tangerine one, So I decided to Name it Tangerine XP.
IT will be running WinXP skinned to look like OSX.

Here is a Pic of a G3 like mine I found....

And this is the Background my wife and I cobbled together last night.
If anyone has a high res of the Tangerine Imac Girl Iw ould love to have it.
I made this with a medium res copy.

Wish me Luck :D

I have one of those, only it is the graphite model. Got a dead Green Apple one sitting here too, if only I had the time and tools......

I shall watch, give me some ideas.

Ok, Well I finally got a chance to upload some pictures.

Unfortunately I do not have any pics from before the Imac was taken apart.
This is how it looked a few days ago......

At that point I had removed all the internals from the imac and happily smashed
them into little bits. I am however going to be keeping the speakers, and the slot
load dvd drive. These will be used int his mod.

This is the motherboard tray from the Imac. The motherboard was mounted on the
bottom, and the CRT's guts on the top. Actually a rather nice design.
As you can see from the pic above, I am cutting the center out of it. This has been
done for a couple reasons. The first and most important is for air flow. We don't want
the AMD to burst into flames :D

The first thing I had to do was to decide where everything will go. So let's cover the
power supply today. The power supply will be in the bottom of the case, below the
original motherboard tray. Now to install jsut a power supply case and all will never do.
Plus it takes up too much room in an already cramped case. Soooo We went from this..

to this....

MVC-007F.jpg

Now where am I going to put that? Easy....
I am going to ground it to the wire mesh at the bottom of the Imac.... as seen here....

Well that is about all I have finished for today. I am having a hard time tracking down
some orange LED's IN Canada. Everywhere I have found to sell them, must ship them from the states. Which makes my 9 dollar order nearly 50-75 bucks!!!!!

Also I still need to find a 15 inch LCD to throw in it. Several of my distributors are
watching for a 15 inch lcd with a broken external case.

Oh yea, please excuse the mess :D I am a very very very busy man!!!!!

No!!!!! You dummy!!! You ruined a perfectly good monitor! You could have wired it right to a VGA Connector. What distruction! What mayhem! Oh that beautiful MOBO and OS smashed!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Actually the monitor was the only thing on the entire system that did not work.
The monitor's red gun was bad.

And I am no dummy.

lol too bad those are all dated parts not to mention dated mac parts. what was he gonna do with them? make a clock?

Atom,
This is for you....
Here you see a perfectly functional G3 Motherboard..... 400mhz version...

And here is what I think of Mac Hardware......

Enjoy :D

Well I did not really get anything done today.
I test fitted the case and drivebay with the powersupply. I of coarse made
a small error and had to move the powersupply back 2 inches.

Nothing picture worthy. Maybe more tomorrow.

ViriiGuy

I'll have to keep an eye on this one...

Brutal smashing of the Mobo though.....

A nekkid headless folder, folding for the [H]orde would have been nice.

That is why :D

Besides I can get a working Imac for just a few bucks, how much do you think
I would get for a board?

OKAY THAT WAS AWESOME!

LOL
Smash, Smash! Now that the shit Mac guts are gone what are you planing on using for your hardware (unless I missed it in your posts?).

Too Cool. I think I would have taken a shotgun to it. Does anyone have an extra Mac?

Well the guts I did not mention specifically, because I am using junk.

:D This is my Shop breakme machine... er was. Which was made out
of various salvaged componets. The MB is a horrid horrid ECS board.

Later on I am going to put in an AMD 64 likely on an ABIT board.

ViriiGuy

P.S. Glad you like the Mac Smashing :) It's the I-Whack 2000!!!!

Omgosh! I saw the first picture and was like wow thats really small. Then i scrolled down and I gasped and put my hand over my mouth. I like old parts... sigh. I woulda bought that from you.

Good luck, good to see someone else making an Apple actually usefull. and there is something really fun about smashing the internals.

edit: come to think of it I have a Mac Acquarium I made 10yrs ago with Mac 64k. I <3 Mac

that made me cry :(

Those who bash, have obviously never used a mac...at least one running OS X
//hides my girlfriends G3 iMac

ive used a mac and personally i dont like em, the one mouse button design screws with my head when trying to use a lateish one (g5 imac i think it was...) the OS is slick, end of story, and i want to try it on my x86 rig if/when it gets properly "modded?" lol

loved watching the smashy smashy to the g3 :D

nice mod virii - as for the apple bashing, i have just as many old shitty x86 boards i've done that to over the years. but, something about the statement of doing it to a mac just makes me giddy.

Hehehehehehe

Glad you guys were amused :)
I have a stable of junk PC's I keep just for smashing
ont hose really rough days. But yes smashing a Mac
is much much more enjoyable.

I am not a Mac fan at all. I liek the look of OSX and this mod will
be running a modded XP to look like OSX. But that is as far as it
goes.

And yes Hide your Macs, I am coming to town!!!!

Randy

My friend in Hawaii and I built a PC into a blue imac. We used an uncased LCD screen and left the power supply naked. We used a slot load DVD to match the slot on the mac. Then we used one of the Via Eden boards and extended out the ports to the side of the mac. Also if you use UV in the case it will glow. Ill try and get some pics.

mac_cnc,
What your friend did, is very very similar to what I am doing.
I am going to use orange LEDs in place of UV lights.
And I am going to use the actual mac slot load drive.

I am still trying to track down a 15 inch lcd. I am checking
with some of my refub dealers atm trying to find one with a
busted case.

I would love to see pics of your friends though.

Hello all,

Just a small update. My Orange LED's from www.ledshoppe.com got here.
I just can;t say enough about this place. Most everywhere I looked 10 orange
LED's by the time I got them to Canada were going to cost around 50-70
bucks with shipping, insurance, customs etc etc etc.

With this place I got 100 of them sent to me for 12.49 :D WOOOOOHOOOOO

I have not gotten anything else done on the mod, as I have the flu.
But I wanted to rescure the thread from page 3 and to give a shout of thanks to
led shoppe.

OMGOGMOMGOMGOMGOMGOMOGMOGMOMGOMG THANK YOU!

A cheap LED place! :p

Hey mac smasher! Did you give up?

I reckon you didnt have the skills to finish what you started. :p

Oh no my young poor misguided friend ;)
I did not give up. It is just I am VERY busy at the shop during the holiday season.
Also I am still trying to track down a couple little odds and ends.

But fear not, I have not given up, it is just mearly on the back of the bench til the
shop dies down a little bit and I have some free time.

Randy

it was clear you hadnt cause most people post when they cant finish a product, most likely just a sad mac fanny :) (i like macs for graphical stuff etc :) )

Hello all,
Just an update......
I have been slowly working on some of the smaller details of the mod, nothing really picture worthy. Just tweaking the placement of a few items. However I did suffer a small set back :D

I wanted to use the original Mac slot load cd drive. But it turns out it was faulty. So I am
now looking for a slimline slot load drive and a slimline to IDE adapter.

I hope to have some updated pics in the next week. But until then, this is the Desktop
I am currently working on for the mod.
imacbackground.jpg

This is all under windows XP. Running RKLauncher, AveDesk, WinRoll and Yz's Shadow to give all those little mac effects.

Also I am still on the hunt for a cheap 15 inch LCD to throw in the mix, I MAY have a line on one that needs a new cable, which would be perfect for this case, as I have to make a custom cable anyway.
