7800X3D will be an utter failure of a CPU

Y'all are crazy lol. Meanwhile I practically reinstall every 6 months...
Ah, a rare sighting of “windows xp syndrome”. That era really solidified the idea of re installing windows every 6 months or so. I got pretty good at installs during that.

But windows 10+ doesn’t require that unless you are switching chipsets in my experience. Some will tell you they switched chipsets and even to another brand cpu with minimal or no issue. They are mad men.

I went X570 to X670E with zero issues. Windows 11. I was shocked. Had multiple full backups because I expected to go fresh.

I never like to buy a chip on release. Seen way too many reviews of "this doesnt OC all that well!" from the reviewers the week before release and then chips a few months later off the fab are OC'd just fine.

There's no overclocking with X3D (without extreme measures). Day 1 chips will be the same as the last ones produced for majority of users.

Ahh okay...

...thinks...where is the fun in that?🤔

It's a set-and-forget CPU. Overclocking has been dead for a long time on a percentage/value basis. The days of getting 50% performance for free are clearly over.
I find that as a good thing. It means manufacturers are putting out hardware that comes already close to the limit instead of the user trying to find it.

Kids today...never experience the joy of setting a jumper pin and getting 40% more raw performance for nothing. Damn corporations...
For sure. My last two CPUs before AM4 were 2500K and 5820K. Basically zero overclocking is hard to accept. Even on 7800X3D, the press is going nuts over some crazies getting 400MHz out of it using custom clock generators. LOL. +400MHz was cool in 2001.

Line as I left

My local MC has been open for 1.5 hours already (Cbus).... still TONS in stock... lol. I have no plans to jump on this specific generation, maybe next AMD or Intel though, whoever is the best in late 2023 / early 2024 if I get the itch.

Got my order in directly from AMD at 9am. My last AMD chip was the Athlon 1800+, so I'm excited to finally go back to team red! I'll be pairing it with a 3080Ti for now which should be a nice combo.
I never saw it go up on AMD's website. My last AMD chip was the XP 2000+ in 2002, lol. Core 2 was a beast.

It was up and down in a flash. Dude in line with me was checking on it. Here in MN we are lucky - Digital River (their fulfillment crew) is here so any normal shipment arrives next day - so it's a solid option. I think most others it would be a few days.

Installing now…

even chipsets you don't need to.. at worst, uninstall the chipset drivers, shut the computer down.. swap hardware, boot.. ezpz. now if you swapped say 7900/50X3D to say intel i think it could potentially cause problems considering it does a pretty severe modification for the windows scheduler. but i'd still try without it first because yolo.

welcome back to the dark side.

just ordered mine on Newegg and this would be my first RED team cpu. This will be my first mini itx build as well. Any advice which mobo I should go with this?

honestly what ever fits your budget and has the features you want.. AMD boards have gotten so much better since the original launch of ryzen that you can't really go wrong with any of the options out there. unless you absolutely need PCIe 5.0 for multiple NVME drives i'd say stay away from them, they're not worth the cost.

Mine still showing 25+ stock. I have a feeling they won't sell out today. I want to go there after work to grab a raspberry pi 4 but I am afraid I will walk out with a 7800x3d system and a 4090 lol.

casino trick.. grab the exact amount needed to buy a pi4, take your license out of your wallet, leave the wallet at home.. how not to spend money you don't want to spend 101. ;)

Coming from Intel, you bet I'll be doing a fresh installation of Windows. Probably going to Windows 11 to make sure to get the most out of the hardware.

i don't miss those days at all, i'm old and lazy now.. i like just being able to install shit, set xmp and never have to look at the bios screen ever again and know i'm not losing out on 40%+ performance like the old days.

windows doesnt care about that anymore, but yes you should go with 11 for the proper scheduler

I have to say that this whole experience of going and waiting for a pc component was quite a fun time. I made friends that I'll never meet again, but the camaraderie while it lasted was awesome!!

About 35 people lined up, with the bulk showing up around 2 hours before opening. I definitely didn't need to go before opening because they had 100+ CPUs on hand, but there's no way to have known that and I don't regret the decision or experience one bit.

Likewise, man. I always have fun when I "camp". I consider myself very lucky to have a Micro Center within 5 minutes of my house. When I "need" a new product I am always happy to hang with the other geeks. Time flies!

I’m hoping Microcenter will do a free ram deal with the 7800x3D as well but I doubt it since I expect the chip to be popular.

And being that I expect my builds to last, I will invest in some relatively more mid-high end components.

Does the 7800x3D require water cooling? I honestly would rather not deal with it, and just use air.
Idk, they had ram bundled with CPU’s that were sold out for months.
Not sure if I missed a different deal, but I know one of the bundles they previously had included only "value" Samsung-based memory. A lot of reported instability / compatibility memory problems in general on AM5, and it seems RAM quality makes a difference with that, even if you are not overclocking beyond just enabling XMP / EXPO (all I plan to do). Just recently there were a bunch of reports of RAM problems with some ASRock MBs on a new BIOS release, using the same RAM that MC included with one of those AM5 bundles.

Anyway, got my 7800X3D at MC. Arrived about an hour after opening. If there was a line, none was remaining, not even at checkout. The store wasn't busy in general. While I was there they were putting some more of them in the display case, and it still shows 25+ in stock. MC was definitely prepared.

Man, I wish I had a microcenter near by, but I'm also glad I don't I'd be changing out parts constantly lol. Glad you had fun sounds like a great experience, I really love their raspberry pi section... I visited once in Cleveland when I was taking a camping trip (also bought my first ryzen setup while I was there).

Eh, my MC still shows 25+. Sucks if you woke up early to go camp lol.
Same for mine (Cambridge, Ma). I'll just wait for my 2TB 990 Pro to arrive in 20 days (hopefully) and go pick one up then. Who knows? By then maybe Microcenter might be offer some sort of combo deal again.
