I give up on my current computer problem and i'm due for an upgrade.
My budget is no more than $1200.

Here's what I have now:
Asus p4p800dlx
P4 2.8G
1.5G ddr400
80gb ata

Here's what I plan on buying
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
athlon 64 x2 4800+ 939socket
WD caviar 250gb sata 3gbs
i'm gonna use the same ram from my old system as it's new

I'm buying a 7600gt pcix for temporary use and i'm giving it to my dad once he decides to put his new computer together. After that I plan on buying a pair of 7 or 8 series nvidias for sli. Is this gonna be more than the new mobo/cpu combo can handle?

I also hear the 939 sockets are dieing out and the am2 is the new wave... I don't want to buy dieing technology, but there are no am2 mobos that use ddr400.

I think you'd be better off with a Core2 socket 775 rig, and a couple of sticks of value ddr2 ram.

I'll be honest, thats a great layout.. from last year..

You need to scrap the whole build and get a core 2 duo system.. sell the ddr400 and buy ddr2.... for $1200 you can build a core 2 duo system that will dramatically out perform that AMD box...

ps, I'm not a !!!!!!, just telling you that Intel has a strong lead right now.. Also, 939 is dead, AMD isn't even making proc's for that socket anymore... They are only building am2's.

ok, did away with amd

here's th cpu
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz LGA 775 Processor Model

good enough?
i'm well under my budget still as the 1200 is for everything except a video card(s).

I need a mobo that supports sli. Will i really need sli to run unreal tournament 2007 at full oh my gawd settings? or will one nvidia 8xxx do the job? will it last a few years? should i just get a sli mobo for insurance purposes?

here are some of the mobos i picked
no sli:
GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard -

sli:
ASUS P5NSLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI Intel Edition ATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS P5B-E LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

You'll need SLI if you want to game at high settings on anything larger than 1600x1200.

FYI, the P5B-E is not an SLI board. For SLI, there are two good choices right now, the 650i SLI chipset, or the 680i SLI chipset. go for one of those if you have a monitor larger than 20".

$1200 is a great budget. What's your budget for the vidcard?

1200 can get a sweet computer

on this build id suggest getting some better ram... and maybe a cpu fan like a zalman or something?

if its in your budget, the 6600 is a faster chip out of the box and a significantly better overclocker... otherwise I think your set!

I'd go with the DS3 or the ASUS P5N-e SLI.

The e6400 is fine, a very modest OC = e6600.

Nice build.

According to the Conroe overclock database, the average e6600 speed is 3,447Mhz compared to an average of 3,303 for the e6400 - However it seems to me that the e6400 entries are overwhelmingly aircooled - whereas there are alot of high overclocks with the e6600 on water and more extreme cooling. If you look at the aircooled entries for the e6600 they look remarkably like the e6400 overclock entries.

OKAY! Final revisions have been made.
I want a sli board for future upgrading. I will be getting a bigger monitor and hopefully a month later another 8800gts.
I already have a psu capable of running one 8800, so that will come later.

Whats the wattage on your psu and what brand is it

if your looking to sli ur 8800's your going to need a shit load of power...

The seagate 7200.10 line is faster than the WD KS line, but also not as quiet.

I have a 430w psu suitable for a 24pin mobo and has 1 6pin pci express connection, more than enough for one 800gts, I will buy a new psu that's sli certified when i get another 8800gts.

I like western digital, I haven't owned anything else and have never had a problem.

your going to be pushing the psu lol

recomended min is 400 watts... ur running 430 thats pretty damn close

but u should be fine unless ur running more than a few hds and stuff... i would think
