Teenagers see right through that stuff, they have to put up with it at school, and know all the ways to hide stuff (alt tab, etc) quickly, and if the parents aren't computer savy, they will have no clue either. But I will agree, trust your kids, educate them on whats good/bad, even if it's you...
I know people that worked as genuises, flew to cali, the works. They hated working for the apple store, and quit very shortly after joining. But they still got to keep all the certs ;)

You cannot "build" an apple computer. You could hack osx on to normal x86 hardware (no support or anything, and borderline illegal.)
However apple hardware uses standard PC parts (ram, hdd, vid cards) so you can upgrade them yourself
