First time using Windows Server 2008 R2. I can't seem to get networking down. My Hyper-V guest machines have no eth0 adapters (I'm installing Crux Linux in this case) and I can't seem to figure out why. I've added it in the 'Hardware' tab, but is there anything else?
I'm running the Server...
Bought my first SATAIII drive, a 6GB Vertex 3. However, I'm unable to get it to work. Sometimes it appears in the BIOS, sometimes it doesn't and sometimes it just stops at the "Detecting drives...."
This is on an ASUS P7P55E D-LX motherboard.
I've set the drive mode to ACHI. Apart from that...
My motherboard sucks. In order to obtain SATA III 6GB/s I need to reduce my PCI-E 16x lane to 8x.
Having ordered a Vertex 3, I'm having a hard time finding out whether reducing the PCI lane to 8x will adversely affect framerates. All the comparisons and reviews I've found were using old...
Here's my setup:
- Intel i7 870
- ASUS P7P55D E-LX
The CPU supports DDR3 1066/1333.
The motherboard supports DDR3 1600/1333/1066.
Does that mean I should get DDR3 1333 as it's the highest common supported speed? I plan on overclocking; is there anything in particular I should look...
So I've been itching to dump my gaudy, space-consuming speakers for a pair of headphones, but since these would mainly be used for gaming purposes, I'd like to retain surround sound (or at least, something close to it).
Now here's what I don't understand, logically and physically, headsets...
So I've got about 100$ to spend on my rig and I figured my sound card could probably use an update.
USE: Gaming
PRICE: 100$, give or take
SPEAKERS: Logitech 540, 5.1
CURRENTLY: VIA VT1708S
I've read a bit about some of the problems with Creative's drivers, so I've kinda ruled those out but...
Howdy folks,
I've built myself a brand new rig. One of the features on my ASUS P7P55D-E LX motherboard is something called "IO Level Up" which downplays the PCI-E port from x16 to x8 (at least, that's my understanding of it - please enlighten me if I'm wrong).
By doing so, this should...
So I've picked up a new PC (huzzah!) and am now in the process of exploring its features.
One of those exciting features is ATI's Eyefinity which allows me to use my three screens at the same time. While I'm waiting for the adapter to arrive, I'm wondering how well it would work on my setup...
I've recently picked up an HTPC with an Nvidia ION GPU. I'm trying to get Rivatuner to force a lower pixel shader so I can play WoW on the machine.
Thing is, Rivatuner has the following message:
"Warning! Riva Tuner has not been tested with the currently installed display driver"
It...
Hola, guys! I've been keeping an eye out for a small, inexpensive system that could serve as a media player and have stumbled onto this MSI Wind:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883152013&nm_mc=OTC-Pr1c3canadaCA&cm_mmc=OTC-Pr1c3canadaCA-_-Desktop+PC-_-MSI-_-83152013...
My new home is underway. I've managed to allow the contractor to let me run CAT5E all over the house, which leaves me with 20 drops in the basement.
The cables go into all the rooms I would need internet or LAN access from (living room, dining room, office and bedrooms) and are terminated with...
I need to pick up a 24-port switch for my new home. I've been eyeing this D-Link unit and it looks like it would do just fine. Any opinions on it, or are switches usually a "they work or they don't" kind of thing?

I'm setting up a NAS box using an old junker PC I've had lying around. I managed to get FreeNAS up and operational but am a little hesitant when it comes to throwing in expensive terabyte drives.
At best, I'd give this PC a few months running 24/7 before it gives up and dies completely. Would...
So we're moving into a house that will be fully LAN-wired and naturally, my first thought was that I need a NAS to have music and movies available all over.
I have two options:
OPTION 1
Buy a NAS enclosure. From what I could find, they're fairly expensive (200$ and over) but are usually...
I need to find a way to have my living room devices (TV, XBOX360, PS3, PC, HAVA) in a LAN so I can easily share media and allow internet access to ethernet-only devices.
The problem lies in internet access. There is no way to have internet access in the living room, other than wifi. Long...
So my music collection is starting to grow, but very few albums have album art. Is there an easy way for me to simply add them? I don't mind looking them up one by one, but how is the association made?
I am NOT using iTunes.
Hey guys, I've got a problem here. I use my laptop to broadcast XBOX360/PS3 gameplay to a streaming website. While I can capture game sounds using the "Stereo Mixer" line just fine, my microphone does not play back when I speak into it and thus does not get captured.
I need an application...
I'm looking at getting a steering wheel and pedals for my XBOX360 but would love to find one that would also work on PC and even PS3. I know they exist as I've found a chinese website that has them, however they're not on sale and look pretty flaky.
Does the XBOX360 steering wheel work on PC?
So I've got a machine collecting dust. I think it's an old 500mhz [EDIT - It's actually 700mhz] P3 (or P2) with a gig of RAM.
I've dropped in a couple of hard drives and am thinking of installing Xubuntu and running a PHP server and a forum off of it for me and a few friends. Very low traffic...
I've recently 'downgraded' my laptop from Vista to XP. While I've managed to get most of the drivers up and running, I've discovered a very strange problem. USB mice do not seem to work.
I've plugged in three mice so I've determined it's not a simple problem with the mouse or the USB port...
I've got a 1st gen Jerker I need to sell. It's got some wear and tear, but it's solid as hell. I'm the second owner. Unfortunately, the first owner wasn't as kind as I am to his desks, but there's no major damages. Some scratches and such. Asking 60$ OBO. Already disassembled and waiting for...
I've got a HAVA Platinum HD connected to a 32in LCD TV in my office.
My dilema is that the TV has a built-in TV tuner. In order to use the HAVA and stream the TV, I need to have it connected to a set top box so I can change channels and such. The HAVA basically sits between the set top box and...
I can't hear my mic's input in Vista. I can see the bar move with input and all, but I can't hear it. The sound card is a built-in IDT (I'm on a laptop).
From what I could find on Google, this is a problem many are having but I can't seem to find a solution.
Halp!
I have multiple mics and inputs I need to mix. Ideally, a three-port mixer would be great but I could work with a dual.
Any really cheap ones out there I can check out?
I've been meaning to replace my wired keyboard and mouse for something cleaner.
Bluetooth isn't really an option since my set tends to lag under heavy CPU load. A pain in the butt when gaming, so I'm probably looking for something in RF.
Any suggestions?
Here's the deal: I'm running a USB TV tuner on Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit. I watch TV through Windows Media Center, which I want to move to the MIMO monitor.
The problem is that the display goes black when I move it to the second screen. While it works in full screen, it captures the...
In Windows XP, I had an application called "ehome.exe" that I placed in the "ehome" directory. Basically, it gave me a visual bar of the volume level when it was changed but I can't find a similar feature in Windows Vista.
Any ideas?
My HP DV8320CA laptop died a few days ago from what I'm assuming is video card failure: I was playing WoW when the screen artifacted and locked up. When I rebooted, there was no image on the screen.
So, anything fun I can do with the parts I'm stuck with? I don't think the video card can be...
I need an app that will let me easily merge together several H264 videos and convert the lot to a DIVX AVI. Is there anyhing noob-friendly out there I can look at?
I've been planning on painting and re-decorating my office this weekend with chocolate/moka colors for a more professional look, but I don't want to get rid of my Jerker since it's such an awesome desk.
However, the problem lies with it's birch color. I've been trying to figure out a way I...
I deleted the shortcut to WMP and can't seem to find the .exe to launch the damn thing. How the hell is the shortcut formed? Google didn't turn up anything relative.
I've got a 120gb Seagate Freeagent Go which has been giving me problems. It got corrupted a little while ago and I've never been able to use it since.
It no longer appears in 'My Computer' when plugged in, but the 'Seagate Seatools' app does find it. It fails most of the tests the application...
So I've got a 7in LCD monitor in my car with a set of analog jacks available. Of course, my first thought was to plug in a retro game console but in most cases they're too big to fit the glove box, and the games are insanely expensive since they're collector's items.
What I'm looking for is a...
I've been having problems with my USB drive (Seagate, 120gig) so I figured I'd format it and start fresh. Thing is, I can't format it. Windows just won't let me do it and I'm not sure how I should proceed.
I removed the main partition and now I'm trying to format it, but it comes back with...
After a few months, I just noticed that the back board was installed upside-down, leaving my desk to sag without proper support. I thought it was just age, but it was assembled ass-backwards... by myself no less. I blame booze, or something.
Anyway, what I wanted to know is if there was a way...
I run most WoW in Windowed mode because I need to have access to my secondary monitor at all times which is really hard on my aging laptop since it has to stretch to the monitor's 1680x1050 resoluion.
Is there an application I can use to either change the screen's resolution when I launch WoW...
I've built a machine from spare parts I had laying around and installed WoW on it for buddies to play when they're at my place. However, it runs it horribly. Here are the machine's specs:
CPU: 3.0ghz P4 Prescott
VIDEO: ATI X850XT (AGP)
MOBO: P4R800-VM (worse motherboard I have ever had by...
I've been away from the PC scene for a few years and need to get myself back on the train. My current rig is horribly, horribly slow and it's time for an upgrade.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Primarily gaming (especially World of Warcraft, TF2...
I'm looking for an app that would hit a pre-determined key every X seconds. Anything out there? I don't know what the Google for, so I haven't found anything.
