i had about the same but with 2TB drives and the 9260-8i and no bbu. but i did have a ups. obviously my dataset was smaller so YMMV but i had no issues at all. just took a bit.
i did mine "online" while booted into my windows server as opposed to the web-bios of the card
you going to bench them on a raid card or softraid? looks liek you will have fun regardless
on a side note, how did you like the marietta microcenter? lol
i have 8 of the 2tb hd204ui in raid 6 on a lsi 9260-8i. running like a champ with no issues whatsoever as of yet..*knock on wood*. they usually are pretty cheap too
i tested out the rebuilding and OCE functions as well as migrating from raid5 to raid6 to see how it all worked with my 8xhd204ui. worked perfectly and was easy to do once you know what to do. i could post some benches later tonight once i get off work in a couple hours if you would like to see...
have you made sure that the raid card is actually working? i guess you can try putting it in another system to see if it is recognized and not faulty.
or you can boot to a live cd of some sorts
i can also say that the asus rt-n16 is a good option. i have it running with dd-wrt mega build. easy to get that setup. i have a media server hooked up via gigE and constantly get bout ~110-115mB/s transfers.
as stated before since you already have a switch, no need to spend more for an 8 port...
are you trying to install 2008r2 to the raid itself? if so i cant help on that as i dont know.
i used to have this same exact card and when i booted up the server, it would show a prompt or key combination to get into its bios. as for setting up the raid, you can do that within the OS with the...
ouch man i really do feel your pain, happened to me not so long ago :(
i ended up building myself a server with a LSI 9260-8i with 8x2TB in raid 6.
i really do recommend you do NOT skimp on the raid controller or the whole setup as you will regret it later.
Im loving my lsi card so far though...
i just googled for merge vob and got this: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/VOBMerge
from the looks of it, it seems straightforward and easy to use. give it a shot to see what happens
it depends on the firmware version/manufacture date.
but in my opinion just go ahead and download the firmware update and update your f4 2tb drives firmware.
you need to boot into dos (i used http://www.freedos.org/ to get into dos, boot from cd)
then all you need to do is run the f4eg.exe file...
I would recommend you still check the firmware version just in case, font want it to bite you in the ass later.
well they shouldn't be too loud for starters as they are lower rpm than most drives. the sound of my case fans completely covers the small sound the hard drives make. sorry :(
i have 8 of the samsung hd204ui in a raid 6 (lsi 9260-8i) with no issues so far. just make sure you update the firmware on ALL of them unless samsung has release the drives with updated firmware.
i cant give any input on other drives as i dont have any of the other options

I have this exact card along with the dual port server version. I am consistently getting speeds between 100-107 mB/s via ftp between my main rig and my storage server. the intel cards cannot be beat performance wise. especially the one you linked for that price.
i had an issue quite similar on my 2008r2 server via microsoft ftp server.
i used flashfxp as the ftp client and every 2-30 seconds the transfer speed would go down to 0 kbs for a couple seconds or longer then kick back in to ~95mB/s. it turned out to be that for some reason it was flashfxp...
I haven't swapped mine out yet either because we haven't had any of the deluxe in stock at the Marietta Microcenter. They are supposed to get some in tomorrow on the truck shipment

i used to have a ubuntu server with 5 1.5TB drives in raid5.
i can recommend that if you take the linux mdadm raid route, that you know what commands to type in
should a drive fail/need to be replaced. i didnt know them correctly so i lost everything on that array.
on a side note, the...
these monitors are great. i have 2 of these side by side. only gripe is that one remote controls both of them, so to change inputs on a single monitor while side by side, you really have to angle it to avoid the second monitor changing at the same time
i have had the 9260-8i card with 8x2TB samsung f4's for a couple weeks with no issues yet.so far it is working great in raid6.
just make sure to update the firmware on the samsungs before you start using them.
i have the exact same issue. sometimes its a small one, (2"X1") on one monitor, sometimes its a huge one on my other monitor.
the only way i found to stop it, is to close the program and reopen it if needed
to be honest these aren't really sold as server boards like supermicro ones or others..
but otherwise like the previous poster said check the websites of the individual parts
