D'oh! Totally forgot we could do this. Think this is going to be the way forward, far cheaper than the Cisco route.
Comms UPS has been on the cards for a while anyway, it's just because the comms stuff is away from our servers.
I'm not going to be using the internet for our voice, it's a pretty rural place so our connection isn't fantastic (4 bonded ADSL gives us ~8Mbps down) and it's already hitting it's capacity, hence our 2 POTS phone lines.
The Elastix appliances look like a very easy solution for this (although...
I don't want something that involves a server or some kind of computer since there wont be an easily available on site tech. I'd rather have the stability, support and "set and forget" of some kind of appliance.
It's a NEC PBX, about 12 years old without necessary modules for stuff like IP or menus. The staff have been asking for things like voicemail, the menu system, and maybe even voicemail to email if possible (although not a huge loss) for a long time now.
We're redoing our core network so now's...
Hi guys,
Moving our crappy old NEC phone system to something new very soon and looking for some help...
My requirements are x2 PSTN lines (we're UK based), 6 IP phone extensions, a power failure phone, voicemail for these extensions, and a menu (1 to go to a voicemail box, 2 to go to...
At the moment it's simply 4 7200rpm disks in two RAID1 arrays. On the first array I have the host OS, a Linux VM and a TMG server, on the second array I have a virtual DC, SCCM server and a Windows 8.1 testing virtual machine.
The problem is both TMG and SCCM use SQL databases for...
Hi guys,
I look after a school's IT setup and am looking to start moving from a pile of tower servers to an "all in one" type setup.
At the moment I'm looking for a sort of "rack on wheels" that will hold x1 switch, x1 UPS and I'm thinking x2 2U servers preferably with a U or two to spare. Has...
Hi Guys,
I'm looking at expanding storage in our network, a) for user profile storage and b) for VMs on our Hyper-V host. I have about £600 to spend.
Currently our Hyper-V host is separate from the physical DC/fileserver for user profiles. Our Hyper-V host is running 5 VMs (x2 Linux, x1 SCCM...
There is only this one router. The router has "LAN1" and "LAN2" (by Draytek's terms, basically just different addresses) which are assigned to different ports on the router.
Hey,
Has anyone got any experience with IP Routing on Draytek routers?
We have a 2830 and I'm trying to set it up like the following:
x1 IP for general NAT usage in "LAN1", no VLAN -- x.x.x.73 <-> 10.0.0.0/24
x1 IP for the router in LAN2 on VLAN ID 2 -- x.x.x.74
----- Routing the rest of our...
Sorry to hijack, but a bit relevant.
How about Dansguardian logs? I haven't managed to find anything yet that will make a nice report of username/IP/visited/action taken or whatever yet. Anyone got any ideas?
If the OS wasn't licensed (or thought to be licensed anyway) you would get a black background with a WGA notification, which locks you out of the desktop entirely bar Internet Explorer after a few days.
Also, you say she has a 20GB hard drive... thats the absolute minimum Windows 7 needs to be...
Definitely the right COM port, I only have 1 COM port which is a USB to serial adapter (tried two different ones of these). I have also tried hitting enter a few times.
I did look to see if I got an IP so I could telnet into it but aside from the default one Windows assigns when it can't find a...
Hey,
I was given an old Cisco 2611 to screw around with, no idea if it's working or not and no idea if the configs and passwords were wiped. Now my problem is that when I turn it on I don't see any console output at all.
Using 9600 baud, 1 stop bit, 8 data bits, no parity or flow control...
We do all our filtering (aside from second level at the LA) using Squid & Dansguardian, which are both free and only require an old Linux box. In terms of wireless guest access, I'd use a second SSID on it's own VLAN, going out via our backup WAN connection, assuming you have a Layer3/managed...
I honestly don't know what MS were thinking with the Public/Domain/Work/Home rubbish when it comes to Server 2008R2, really it should have been taken out. I've been caught out by it a few times when deploying 2008R2 on our work domain.
I really liked Ubuntu, I don't care too much for customisation but it let me get my OS set up the way I liked in minutes... now with Unity I've switched to XUbuntu, Unity is just awful.
Literally all you need to do is install Linux somewhere and install OpenSSH, this'll do exactly what you want, you can then use something like PuTTY to connect.
Thanks, I tried it though and they're all reporting the same free space, even though I know this isn't true.
Also, I'd like to know the same as freezervv :p
Hey,
So I am monitoring a few Linux servers using Nagios but I've hit a snag with disk space. I've set it up like so:
define command{
command_name check_disk
command_line $USER1$/check_disk $ARG1$
}
define service{
use generic-service...
Just to say thanks for the info guys, I'm more in it for the learning curve than getting the certs, they're just a "nice to have" in my view right now!
Hey,
I was just wondering what kind of monitoring software people use? I like Nagios but the configuration is long and tedious and really a configuration GUI would be nice... so has anyone got any ideas?
Which also brings me onto my next question... How would I add custom MIBs for various...
Hey,
Does anyone have any tips for learning how to use Cisco-based equipment? I'm really into computer networking and would like to begin to look into setting up enterprise routers etc up via command line.
Thanks
Take it to the Apple store and they'll help you out. A lot of the out of warranty help comes down to being nice to the Apple staff... be nice to them and they'll be nice back ;)

Servers and Workstations: Dell
Switches: HP and Netgear
Access Points: Netgear, looking to transition to Ubiquity
Routers: MS Forefront, Draytek and Cisco
UPS: APC
Telephony: NEC
Printing etc: Samsung and Sharp
Laptops: Dell and Lenovo
Virtualization: Hyper-V
Yeah, everything on our network is using Forefront as their gateway...
I thought this might be the issue, hence why I mentioned Forefront in the first place, I'll point it at the Draytek tomorrow and see what happens.
Hey,
So I have a network behind an MS Forefront box that's working fine and dandy... until I want to port forward on a secondary router I've added.
So I installed a Draytek 2830n to present an ADSL connection in our comms cab (for VPN, to keep it off MS Forefront for now) and have it straight...
We use RJ45 patch panels for our phone system (soho type network, so we mix phone/data on patch panels) and haven't had a problem with RJ11 jacks in them in the last 10 years or so, maybe I've just been lucky, but I always thought the ports were made so we could mix and match RJ11/RJ45 without...
