IMO the X79 isn't ripe yet although if you had an obsolete system then head on in but otherwise the x58 is pure solid reliability and cost effective with power to spare..for now anyway. enjoy and keep us posted as you test. ;)
When I mentioned I might actually start using the xb360 when they finally come out with a real strategy type game such as Battlestation or Command and Conquer one of my kid's said "ya mean I gotta plan stuff in order to win..that takes all the fun out of playing"! I couldn't help but wonder how...
X-bit Labs,a renowned tech site has posted a wonderful and lengthy article on PSU testing which is a *must* read.
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/other/display/psu-methodology.html
Ok,I diabled the AUTO detection but system still cannot find the older IDE HD
when it boots properly into XP from the new SATA HDD,I've tweaked the bio's so many times but I'm apparently missing some details. :(
If your happy with the PSU your currently using, why not just paint it,thats all your buying when get the black PSU but If you need a new PSU,I'd also go for the Fortron.
You should be impressed at how heavy that Fortron 400w single fan unit is..they stuff the largest heat sinks they can into it..theres no room for a second fan and it doesn't need one. This series from FSP will last for many years, the only thing I can imagine replacing eventually even then is the...
The gang at http://www.endpcnoise.com/ are fanatical about noise and quality componates in the special *quiet* systems they build for picky customers..they use the Antec Sonata case then remove/replace the Antec 380/350 (which they sell for very reasonable price-$39) and replace them with...
Newbie questions:
I just installed an older IDE HD that has 98se in a NEW system that has XPpro setting it as
slave and my main sata as master on a Abit IC-7 with Phoenix Award bios. I tried booting
normally into XP but the older ide HD was booting instead and naturally it couldn't finish...
Another outstanding review site is Xbit labs,I especially liked this recent review I read about the venerable FSP group by Oleg Artamonov
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/other/display/zalman-psu.html
I just checked newegg refurbished bin and they have a Aopen (Fortron) 350w for just $32 add $1 for shipping (not sure Canada shipping) and you have a bargain bin price on a quality
PSU...just depends on your circumstance though. :)
People in the know who have reviewed the Seasonic rate it right at or close to the top,I would have purchased the excellent 350w if I hadn't already ordered a Fortron..I can't imagine going wrong with that PSU..quiet,reliable,very stable, their only problem is people are just now
getting to...
Nam-ng,don't feel so insulted or hurt simply because other's also have opinions..I read your posting history (12 messages) here and you have not gone into *any* detail whatsoever with your posts, maybe you should try and be alittle more helpful and detailed since you make the point that you have...
I sure wish I'd found you several weeks ago, very helpful for the future anyway :) I actually *almost* thought about that when I was checking the plug wire assignments, question if you know, why the 24/8 plugs on the server boards?
I hate to be a spoiler but would you risk that valuable sys on a cheapo PSU that can actually do some serious damage and if your lucky, just cause minor problems like rebooting and sys hangs..many a system has been fried buy someone trying to save a few $ and cutting corners..you'll feel alot...
Fortron..they've been building quality PSU's for many years,if you measured a PSU by weight..they always win since they have massive heatsinks. Vantec Stealth should also be on the list.
You didn't mention Seasonic..it's the equal of any top PSU ,just harder to find.
The Fortron/Sparkle FSP 460w with PFC is a server model you'll need the 24 pin (server) connection on your mobo or adapter..oops,I just reread your message. If you purchase a server PSU they come with 24 pin power and no 4 pin..so you'll need a 24 to 20 and a 8 to 4
adapter,the nice thing about...
Thanks for the tip..I'm still trying to figure out the options in this (award bios) that came with this abit ic7..so far it winning all the battles. Maybe I'll have to set it up as a dual boot system but that certainly isn't what I want as noted in my opening post.
Noob stuff for most of you but...I installed a second HD that has 98se on it and I made sure I
set the jumpers to slave but when I bootup the system it wants to boot 98se instead of
XPpro..I've checked the bios and it shows the 98HD as "slave" so why does it want boot privledges?
I've got a...
Good stuff guys,I always suggest to people looking for info about the heart of any system..the much overlooked PSU..that they visit HardOCPand read the excellent FAQ..a must read especially for OC'rs. I also read SilentPC and Frostytech but don't forget Xbit Labs..they sure did a great review...
I had a struggle installing a Aeroflow 7040 in a IC-7 board..had to remove a small heat sink from a nearby small chip and then I had to really bare down to get the HSF to lock..the damn board was flexing it was so hard, now I'm wondering if this is typical install with this cooler/mobo combo..I...
I've read dozens of articles about 98 and XP but I can't seem to find out if I can
install my old 98se harddrive as a slave without OS conflicts..naturally C: will be
my XP boot drive. I've got so many programs on the 98 HDD that I'd like to use but I suspect I will have many problems,I'd like...
I will no longer purchase ball bearing HDDs.I'm so pleases with my Samsung fluid drives..they almost seem frictionless amd so quiet I need to watch the HHD led to see if it's running BUT..I can't find a sata 200g fluid drive..I'd prefer sticking to the Sam's
if possible, anyone have a good source?
I like that idea..I'd certainly put my vote in for the Vantec 420A (which Tom didn't test,he tested the lesser ION) We've been using the Vantec at boeing's data center for several years without a single failure although we do replace them when they get close to the 150,000 hour mark..even then...
Never..repete..Never especially if your a OC'er buy a cheapo PSU,its actually the heart of any system.
If you can afford one..get a Vantec 420A (150,000 hours MTBF) it's considered by many the best, next would be a Antec True power (80,000 hours MTBF)..a quality PSU is insurance sice they not...
I'll make this my first post :)
WAIT!
The new Intel chipset LGA-775 will be out very soon (Q2)Anandtech mentioned it will come out of the gate supporting all the prescotts up 4ghz this year and the new Tejas (prescotts successor) soon after..thats about as future-proof as you'll get at...
