The only reason I'm even considering this is because the backups are incomplete. I know, I know. I screwed up and did not keep up with them, and now I'm going to have to pay the consequences... I'm just trying to minimize the consequences to fit within my "moronic mistakes" budget.
whoa nelly. My comments were directed at that first paragraph, specifically this:
That series of statements is rather misleading, and my statement was an attempt to explain why. Yes, you mentioned access times, and you appear to own some SSDs (and thus may know personally how beneficial they...
I don't think most people realize how important this trait is for a hard drive. How often do you copy/paste large files to/from that drive (read speeds) vs. access individual files and programs? The access time is responsible for speeding up that process of simply opening/closing programs and...
I attempted an OCE with my 8-disk RAID5 array, and the process resulted in the corruption of the RAID (details in this thread). Ultimately, GetDataBack and R-Studio were not successful, so my last option is to send the drives/RAID card off.
That being said, the data's important, but not so...
They don't have disks, but that doesn't mean something couldn't come loose inside the device itself... Would you want the cashier to drop or throw your ipod (even if it's NIB) on the floor right after you bought it at Best Buy (the equivalent of a nice 'n rough shipping adventure)?
quick update--getdataback seems to be pulling most of my files, so I feel like something with the array should be correctable before I do a complete recover. Unfortunately I'm not versed in filesystems to know what to do :\
I'll try to contact Adaptec to see if I can squeeze something out of them.
Unfortunately, "Prime" status has nothing to do with packaging quality (other than the speed at which you receive it). I ordered an ipod nano a few months ago from Amazon (prime) and my package had the ipod in it and TWO air bubbles. That's it. No bubble wrap, no foam, just two air bubbles. I...
sounds like I'm SOL again... I bought this card off ebay in supposedly new OEM condition, and it turned out to be a demo card. What that basically means is that I have to stick with the original firmware (if I attempt to upgrade the card will no longer work), so 15336 it is!
The strange thing...
I'm using 8 WD5000ABYS drives and just added a WD5002ABYS (RE3 version of the same drives).
The array was created while using Windows Vista x64 last year, and when I installed Windows 7 x64 RC1 a few months ago the array was instantly recognized (and I've had no problems since).
I want...
I just expanded my Adaptec array (model 51245) by a drive (just doing one at a time for safety), and after the 6-7 day OCE everything seemed to finish without a hitch. At some point during the rebuild my array disappeared from My Computer (running Windows 7 x64). I restarted my computer after...
FWIW, I recall setting up some JBOD on my 51245. The drives showed up as "Adaptec Array" in HDtune, despite them being single drives.
I too wondered how to see temperatures of the drives themselves. I thought I remember seeing those details on an older adaptec card I had (4805SAS), but it's...
OK, Ockie, I'm done combating your personal vendetta to defend the seller. We obviously disagree with where responsibility lies in a e-commerce, and I'm not going to convince you otherwise.
I started this thread to warn others about the firmware "time bomb", and included a bit of ranting...
No, I'm simply trying not to screw over the seller (because like I said, part of me thinks he was also unaware of what he was selling, and his listing about it being new/oem was only partially devious).
Bottom line--I want and am going to get a refund through a CC chargeback. Whether or not...
One of the things I hate most in this world is when retailers or salespeople take advantage of consumers and buyers. Yes, buyers should do research. Yes, buyers need to make sure what they're buying is legitimate. Due-diligence hardly includes researching the history of sales in a manufacturer's...
I normally would agree with you, but I have been buying and selling on used markets (eBay, craigslist, and various other areas) for years. I do thorough research when buying used items (especially computer parts), but this was not something I expected. I had never even heard of EVAL cards prior...
Just heard back from Adaptec. They said something to the effect of "Nope, we can't help you. The card is toast so you will need to resolve the problem with the seller."
Opened a case with Paypal last night... that's my last hope.
Sorry, I should have been a little clearer. I meant to warn people buying OEM cards to make sure they weren't actually evaluation cards--I suppose this can be verified by checking the serial number on the card with Adaptec's product registration page, because when I tried to register the product...
So I thought I got a pretty good deal on an "OEM" Adaptec 51245 on eBay (paid $550 shipped, retails for over $1000). Little did I know this was an EVALUATION card without the eval sticker. According to a rep at Adaptec, "The problem is that this card will work fine until you try to update the...
Another bump in the road....!
I tried flashing the card's bios to the latest from Adaptec's site. Everything seemed to go as planned in the Adaptec storage manager, but after I restarted the computer the card's bios would not start. I tried reflashing the bios to a previous version (using...
I just converted it to dynamic and everything still appears to be the same. I was not able to extend any further in diskpart, and diskmgmt is still showing the discrepancy in sizes.
Here's another shot that may provide more info (although I still don't understand it):
Interesting that the volume capactiy is only 930GB, but the volume actually spans 3TB...
I checked out DISKPART and it was also misleading. Here's a screenshot:
I don't understand why DISKPART and DISKMGMT would say one thing, but Vista would say another. Why can't everyone just play nice?
I recently expanded my Adaptec card's RAID5 array from 1TB to 3.2TB, but for some reason Vista is not properly expanding the volume. The partition is GPT (so there shouldn't be a 2TB limitation), and disk management DID let me "extend volume", but the actual partition has not changed its size...
If the weather is anything like Texas (which Florida seems to have been the few times I vacationed there), then that sounds like a bad idea. Temps will be way too hot in the late spring/summer/early fall, even if it's in your garage with wind flow.
ding ding. I lose!
Ultimately, my only option is to get 2 2TB drives, move the data, delete/convert current volume to GPT, expand, then move data back.
I did not get the memo.
The feelings of ineptitude are mounting!
The entire process finished (expansion and rebuilding), but I hit a roadblock... The logical array seemed to expand correctly, but I cannot expand my partition on it in Vista:
For some reason, Vista detects the additional space, but I cannot...
Just an update for anyone searching the internet... my reconfig just finished (ahead of schedule, it seems), and sure enough the rebuild began immediately thereafter. This rebuild seems to be going MUCH faster (looks like it will take just under 2 hours), so that's a relief. Maybe this is where...
As I posted in the other RAID5 online capacity expansion (OCE) thread I am currently expanding my array from 4 to 6 drives on an Adaptec 51245. I say "currently" because this is an 8-10 day process...
Anyway, earlier today I hear the alarm go off on the RAID card. Apparently one of my drives...
If only I could just shut my computer down for two days to do this (instead of having it online for 8)...
The crappy thing is the fact that I have two more drives I want to add AFTER this expansion. I figured it would be quick so I only did two drives initially.
They should put a time...
Just thought I would bump this thread.... I previously had an Adaptec 4805SAS, bought a 51245 and the array was instantly recognized. I threw some empty drives into my hotswap bays and tried to do an OCE from a 4-drive RAID5 to 6-drive RAID5 (thinking the process would be quick given the faster...
