The october firmware bricked drives (including mine), the just-release firmware works great. I've seen no reports of bricking. I am not sure which firmware comes with a recently purchased SSD. Just download the new firmware and attempt to flash it; it will update if needed.
Win7 pretty much figures out for you, nothing special to do, assuming you are doing a clean install. Use AHCI or IDE in your BIOS to make sure TRIM works.
Well, I run a 5870 on an EVGA x58 SLI LE. No problems. I can say that at idle the card is at the noise level of my undervolted fans in my not-quite-SPCR silent Antec p183. It's much quieter than my old ASUS 4870 Dark Knight -- but that's because it exhausts heat, unlike the previous card...
Success. Didn't bother to switch out of AHCI mode this time. 7 had to reboot once after "detecting new hardware" but it's been smooth since. I had planned to do a reinstall tonight anyway so this works perfectly.
This certainly went better than my total bricking last time.
My bricked drive had the 100 mb partition.
EVGA X58 SLI LE
Using Microsoft AHCI Drivers only
IDE for flash, AHCI for everything else
W7 x64 Ultimate
After restoring from WHS, the new drive does not have the 100 mb partition, yay, but what a PITA to restore bootability to the restored...
Yeah, $25 sucks but it's my boot drive. Just restored back from WHS and typing this on my newly-the-same desktop. Got the new drive 24 hours after bricking the first, to me that's worth $25 vs waiting 5-7 days easily.
Just to add to the data, I bricked the drive doing the firmware update on...
Well, my G2 RMA crosship from Intel just arrived. Can't knock their service. The question is, do I run the firmware update on the new drive? I want TRIM... but also want a working desktop...
I crosshipped drives for a $25 fee so my new G2 arrives today sometime. I had posted in the other thread but to tamp down any confusion, I followed all procedures to the letter including switching out of AHCI mode for the update and switching back for first win7 boot. After a few error-filled...
They announced quite some time ago that they would not be enabling TRIM on G1 drives. Most speculation has assumed they are just being evil.
Cheer up, at least you won't be tempted to upgrade and brick your drive like me.:p
I just ran the firmware update and it seems to have semi-bricked my 160 gb G2 drive. EDIT: Make that a full brick, RMA in progress.
Retracing steps:
Changed to IDE mode as the readme suggests. Ran firmware disk, which confirmed the update was successful. Restarted, changed to AHCI mode in...
Can't seem to find the SSD toolbox on the Intel site despite the links in the Legit Reviews article above... anyone have better luck?
Going to update the firmware now, though :)
Thing or Things? TRIM is not available in RAID mode as far as I've seen. Of course, until Intel releases new FW, it's not available in regular mode either ;)
I bought my 160gb from Newegg on their first shipment and paid $471.02 shipped. Lucky to get in early before the demand price...
Aggressive Superfetch was one of my main complaints about Vista. Whenever I restarted the computer would take forever to be responsive when the desktop came up due to all the anticipatory loading. I am so happy that Win7 got rid of that. I don't miss the later quick loading of Superfetch now...
I have a preorder there and the auto-notify at Newegg. I have all the other parts for my new rig ready, so need them ASAP. If Newegg wins and I can cancel the Amazon order at that time, so be it :)
Just got my 3007WFPHC. No dead pixels, no scratches. The refurbished lottery works for me. The only sign of use is a case badge someone stuck on the LCD's stand. Great buy, I'm loving the amount of screen real estate.
You get the same 3 year warranty and zero-dead-pixel guarantee as a new monitor. Not much of a risk to save ~$250.
EDIT: I almost pulled the trigger on a HP L3065 a while back from TigerDirect (and maybe that LG 30" from Newegg) but decided to avoid getting a few stuck pixels and being unable...
It's not out of stock, you just have to search for "Dell 3007WFP-HC 30" Widescreen Monitor" in the dropdown instead of 3007WFP-HC. They list 135 of them available at 799.00.
EDIT: Bad filter. They have about 20. Soon to be 19.
I've been unhappy with most of my mic solutions for a while so I may pick them up just for that. I see this as a Vent helper more than anything; I'll likely keep my Senn 595's for serious music listening.
When the framerate differences are on the order of the single digit percent spread across a representative spectrum of games, call it a tie. For example, here we learn that the GTA performance is essentially the same for both parts.
I picked the 4870 1gb because it's a bit easier to run...
I've bought several cables from Blue Jeans for my various A/V systems in the past few years. Great stuff, no fluff. Only thing I don't buy from them is HDMI/Digital cables, thanks Monoprice, but I get all of my analog stuff there.
