    Ball and Chain Goes Digital

Just getting done with finals has kept me in the studying/procrastinating mood enough to figure out a brilliantsolution for those lazy students who need to be chained to study: Stick it in a backpack and wear baggy pants. The idea is pretty sound though. And come college, many schools have...

    Asus HD4850 512mb, overclocked, $115 ar, fs

Mine's been working fine for the last month. Core stays under 80*C load, but you better stick some heatsinks on the ram and vregs and/or stick a fan right next to it. The fan is damn near silent idle and barely gets audible at full speed, so overall still better than the stock cooler.

    ASUS Radeon HD4850 512MB, $114.99 after MIR @ Newegg!

4850 CrossFire will be faster than a single 4870 1gb, and at this price it's the same or cheaper to go with 4850s. 4870 CrossFire gives more potential down the road and would probably be quieter, but this deal makes the 4850s a much better value today.

    Intel E8500 C2D CPU & ECS MB Combo $135 Fry's B&M (1 day sale 12/26)

Just got back from my local Fry's :D Call ahead of time to check if they still have them in stock, it's an awesome deal. $135 + tax (no MIR) out the door for E8500 and ECS G31T-M. The mobo got listed separately on the receipt for $40.14, so as long as I get back within 15 days, looks like I'll...

    black friday and Fry's

I'm holding out for Fry's for some nice 45nm + mobo deals. They seem to have slightly less violent/crazy shoppers in line early, unlike BBY and CC. I've never heard of their ad getting leaked more than a few hours in advance, which is pretty incredible for them to pull off.

    BFG GTX 280 OC / 260 OC for $380 / $200

Seeing as ATI just released the 4830 today, I wouldn't be too worried about something new on the red side better than a 4870 1gb anytime soon, except for maybe a 4850X2, which has been in the rumor mill for along time. I'd bet on an Nvidia speed bump for the holiday season, which is easily...

    BFG GTX 280 OC / 260 OC for $380 / $200

A $20 rebate straight through BFG is as close as you're going to get for a while, new release notwithstanding. You do have until Halloween to decide of course.

Old base Macbook - new - $850 @ Best Buy

Of course first gen Macbooks weren't going to be as fast as later versions, but those have been out for more than 2 years, while later ones haven't. Physically, they haven't had much (any?) change until now, and hardware wise, a 2GHz C2D isn't that much faster - 25% absolute maximum for programs...

Old base Macbook - new - $850 @ Best Buy

I've had one of the original (CD, not even C2D) Macbooks for over 2 very well used years. As a fair warning, yes this is tl;dr, and for a six word summary of my experiences: I call my Macbook a Crapbook. I'm up to 309 cycles on the battery, which now just barely lasts 2 hours, 2.5 if I have the...

Sooo temping for the 260 w/ Trade Up... These deals are out because it's BFG's 6th anniversary, not necessarily because new cards are coming out soon. Otherwise, others would start to mark original 260s down again. Must resist...

    Submersion : Thinktank Revision 2.0

The original Thinktank inspired me to get into water and dice cooling, and projects in general that are absurdly over the top and beyond what most sane people will ever attempt. 4 years since you posted the original's awesomeness, and now we get rev 2.0 to drool over too. I know you have a few...

    X48 vs P45 Crossfire Comparison... OUCH 8x/8x = fail

I'd venture a pretty strong guess that Crossfire'd 4870s are able to better meet the bandwidth for 2560x1600 w/ 4x AA. Consider how at lower end cards can deliver playable results at lower resolutions, but quickly drop off as resolution and AA get higher. Crossfire'd 4870s may be getting by some...

Swiftech H2O-220 Compact CPU Liquid Cool Kit

Either something in the pump is fried, the rad's trying to cool a lot more heat than the 10 watts the DDC inside would put off, or water isn't flowing correctly (bubble inside the Apogee Drive is my guess).

    Cyro-Z - Available Next Week?

The cooling world's Duke Nukem Forever actually getting released, much less available to the actual public? Even double its long ago rumored $300-$400 price would be cheaper than a Vapo, and with Chilly1 involved, it has a good shot to cool better to boot. Here's to hoping February 4th is a...

Watercooling nighmare after dropping down to 10mm OD tubing!! (high temps)

With that little variance in idle/load, sounds a lot more like a really bad mount. Those 90* elbows aren't helping anything, but they're definitely not enough to explain that big of a difference, especially with a D5 (have you tried changing it to 5?).

External watercooling in a ammunition case

Very nice and smoothly done! I was working on the same thing nearly 3 years ago, and it's definitely not easy to pull off. Cutting through 3/32" steel is not fun, and that looks like it's about the size as the one I used, which is pretty cramped to fit everything internally. It would look...

Zalman Reserator 2 vs Swiftech H20-220 Apex ULTRA+

The cheapskate says Yates from Petra's are quite easily the best price vs. performance fans you'll find today, especially D12SM's (which undervolt better than SL's). If you really have the urge to spend $10 or $20 () on a single fan, it really depends what level of quiet you want and...

WC Rig (in progress), seeking advice

Generally, Pulling is quieter, and both are just about exactly the same performance wise. Yes, push-pull will give slightly better temps, at the cost of 3 more fans' worth of price and noise (I'd highly recommend trying Yate Loon D12SM's, great performance but they'll undervolt very nicely...

    temps?

Is your D5 on the highest flow setting (5)? Are you sure you have a good mount on your FuZion? That low of a difference between idle and load sounds like a bad mount and/or not enough flow to me. Pics would help, but I'm otherwise finding difficulty explaining why you have that high of temps.

    D-Tek FuZion Accelerator Nozzle Kit

From what I've heard, most people use the 4.5mm nozzle and see anywhere from a 1-4*C improvement. Compared to other tweaks/improvements you can buy for a loop, it's a pretty good investment :D.

Reserator XT WC newbie jump start

I'm not as perturbed by mixing metals as long as anti corrosive liquid is used. My issue is Zalman using aluminum components in a $450 kit, when copper would cool much better. Now the overall external housing would be somewhat impractical to make out of copper, but I highly doubt that it adds...

    Qx9650+3GPUS+780SLi+TJ09 WaterCool Project

I'd say not putting water on the CPU when you already have other loops going is an absolute waste of resources. If you already have the spare radiator capacitance for adding the CPU, a good block is about the same price as a good HSF. Apogee GT's (about 1-2*C below the GTX) are only $42, so it...

    Radiator Equivilency: 2x120 = 240?

The added restriction from 2-120's comes from the extra tubing run(s) you need to get both in the loop and the extra two barbs on the second radiator. AKA, nothing worth losing sleep over. You'll also see pretty much no difference performance wise from 2-120s and a 2x120 of the same model, no...

    Qx9650+3GPUS+780SLi+TJ09 WaterCool Project

I like Xilikon's CPU + 1 GTX + Chipset(s) in one loop and 2 GTXs in the other. Set up like that, you could easily get by with an MCR320 for each loop. If you're willing to fork out the extra $200 for PA120.3's, you will see some lower temps, and while I will be joining others here questioning...

Reserator XT WC newbie jump start

For $200 and pretty much the same level of setup as the Reserator XT, I'd quite readily recommend Swiftech's H20-220 Compact in pretty much every situation. Water Cooling, is it Pointless?

For just a CPU, the ginormous HSF that I'm amazed aren't ripping mobos apart are simply a lot more cost effective, and it takes over $100 more to get a loop that will match something like an Ultra 120E, although water stands a chance of being quieter at this price range. Once you start adding a...

AC full cover 8800GT block in Stock!

Eh, for the mosfets, I don't think copper is needed that much anyway. Hopefully some of the savings is passed on to the consumer, seeing as how EK is having difficulties like AC keeping resellers supplied enough to keep up with demand.

G92: 7800GT: 6800 (nu I think): Recent cores haven't been getting smaller; if anything, they've been getting bigger. Even if the cores were staying the same, reducing the core contact does pretty much nothing except reduce the performance that should expect for a $100 block that loses...

Part of the DD criticism is that the DD's IONE picture shows it in a bad light...literally. Sandblasted, it's not going to be flashy to begin with, but the pic you used is pretty boring compared to EK shots. Even the better shot they use for their store is still fairly boring. I agree that...

Any screw-mounted G92 memory heatinks out yet?

If you really want screw on heatsinks, iandh @ XS has been making/selling them for a while. Supposedly he's working on selling them through Petra's, but for now you'll have to PM him. D-tek also has their 8800GTS UNI-Sink, and I hope they mean the G92 version.
