The breakup was the result of a case brought against AT&T for mis-using its monopoly power, which is not the same as the government breaking up AT&T just because it was a monopoly. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._AT%26T:
In the 1970s the Federal Communications Commission...
Being a monopoly is not illegal, at least in the US. However, monopoly companies have more restrictions on what they can and can't due under the law than non-monopolies. However, I'm pretty certain that lawful protection of their IP is allowed. If Intel's interpretation of the contract...
It's probably that the cross-license covers more than simply the x86 instruction set. The link to the contract that pxc provided shows that it seems to be pretty wide ranging. However, all the details are redacted for confidentiality.
From the link pxc provided and the tone of the article, the big question is probably around the sectio nrelated to subsidiaries:
1.22. "Subsidiary" shall mean any corporation, partnership, joint venture,
limited liability or other entity, now or hereafter, in which a...
I have a 30" Slimfit hooked up to a media center PC running SageTV. The media center is perfectly readable, but if I need to mess around in windows to adjust something I hook up a regular monitor for readability.
Well, the 2 corse are one single chip. More likely it's that with whatever load you had running, one core was doing more of hte work than the other. It doesn't always balane work evenly between cores
If you have a 965 chipset motherboard, it will support Core 2 Duo
if you have a 975 chipset M/B, it might, depending on MB revision. You would need to check with the MB manufacturer.
I tihnk some M/B manufacturers have used other chipsets with Core 2 Duo, but those are generally special...
I think you might have misunderstood me Poncho. I wasn't getting into the Native quad core thing. I agree that Kentsfield is native quad core and 4x4 is not. I was going back to the comment that the OP cited about "Intel's offering being hacked together'. I was just saying that If Intel's...
The original documentation on 4x4 was that it would require 2 FX class chips. I don't know if that's been relaxed to AMD X2 in general, but 2 FX would cost at least as much as 1 Core 2 Quadro Extreme.
As to some of the comments in the original post, 4x4 is at least as hacked together a...
Hello,
I've been runnin an X1900XTX wuth the Zalman VF-900 cooler on an Intel D975XBX motherboard. I picked up a X1900 crossfire edition now that hte prices have dropped so I can run in Crossfire mode. The problem I have is that when I move the X1900XTX to the second PCI-E x16 slot, the...
Just installed a Seasonic M12 in my P180 and works fine :) Not sure if Newegg has them in stock yet, but some other etailers do, and local Fry's had htem as well
fry's is OK, though their selection can be hit or miss, so if looking for a specific make and model you might be out of luck.
Other stores sort of depend on where you live. Best Buy has some components though not nearly as large a selection as Fry's. I cna't think of too many B&M chains...
As a random note, I was in Fry's today They had a shelft tag up for the Seasonic M12-700 ($199) and for the S12 energy+ 650W ($159). But nothing on the shelves, nothing in stock, and no idea when it might be arriving. But if Fry's is bothering to put shelf tags up, maybe next week is more...
At least you got a response. I've emailed them twice (once this week, onece 2 weeks ago) asking about hte M12 and S12-Energy+ availability in the US and got no response.
October is a bummer.
Just bumping this one. A local store is selling the 650W trios for $110 this week, which is very tempting. The only thing holding me back is that the Seasonic S12 Energy+ and M12 models are supposed to be out soon.
I've been looking on the web and haven't been able to find any reviews for this one. It's made by Seasonic and has the same power outputes (550/650) as the upcoming Seasonic Energy+ models, which sadly aren't available in the US yet.
even if you have all the ports disabled, the monitor itself still counts as a USB device. So when you turn the monitor off, the comptuer registers it as a USB device being disconnected.
OK, been a while since I was running an ATI card on my game system so haven't paid much attention to how the clock speed functions. But I installed a new X1900XTX (couldn't resist the new lower price) and in Windows the catalyst control center shows:
Current GPU Speed: 500
Current RAM...
Ok, messed with it a bit more but still need help and advice :)
It seems that somehow, even with no video card installed, my computer will still boot to windows and not error out. No clue why THAT is...
I also doubt that it's an overheating problem with a poorly installed VF900. even if...
All,
Ran into a situation that I'm not quite sure the problem is so looking for suggestions.
I bought an ATI X1900XTX from newegg at the new lower price to pair with my conroe (once that arrives) and replace an X800 card. I also got the Zalman VF900 video card cooler, since I'd heard...
I'll withhold final judgement on teh quality of the launch until we see what availability looks like on Modnay and tuesday. While the launch schedule has been massively frustrating, with the July 14th NDA lift, the July 27th launch party, etc., after all that August 7th is the day that Intel...
The yields are fine. They've stated that they expect to ship ~1million in the first 7 weeks of launch and ramp up from there, which is not far off from the 2.7 million/quarter number. Keep in mind that the same die also goes to the server side Woodcrest products as well.
They don't drop everything else just to make Conroe (whether they should or not is a separate argument). But they also have to make the mobile chips (Core Duo/Yonah), chipsets, and the Pentium/Celeron family which will continue to exist as the low end of the product line for some time...
Nope, no production issues that I'm aware of and being on the material input site I usually hear about these things. Just a matter of supply vs demand and retail vs OEM.
Just don't show em the rest of the prices, mattsaccount ;)
I hope so, but I wouldn't be surprised if it remains tight in retail space until the end of the month. I wish there was more immediately available, but understand the econmics and demands of the ramp condition.
Thanks for handling that Poncho. though not sure if I could have stopped laughing long enough to type a response.
yes, the retail channel for Conroe is tight, but there are all teh OEMs to feed. I'm willing to bet that if you add OEM + retail, there are way, way more Conroe chips hitting...
I would suggest filing a complaint with the Better Business BUreau (bbb.org I think). Not honoring advertised prices is one of the things that they deal with.
Well, I only called in, will have to swing by after work and see what the box says :) wish I had access to my home email right now, pretty sure I saw the 999 in the email ad they sent earlier this week.
Bah, I called Microcenter near me and they said they had some, but it was 1299. I might be willing to get the XE version, but not at 300 over the tray price. It was eve nthe OEM version that htey had, not boxed.
Where did yo usee the 999 price listed and how can I get them to hold to that?
The thing about the 4x4 'support' from the game manufacturers that is overlooked is that they're not saying anything will specifically take advantage of 4x4. They just are making their games multithreaded. Which means that the games will take abetter dvantage of dual core systems like Conroe...
The official launch data has been July 27th for a few months now, so saying that hte processors aren't coming out as expected is a little silly to say. The question that comes up is where in the shipping flow are the chips on release day. Are they all still at Intel? Are they at distributors...
Plus he's overstating Intel's market share loss. I tihnk it was 57% of retail desktop computers. THis doesnt count laptops, or servers, or online computer sales, etc. Intel's share of the overall x86 processor market is still on the order of 75%, and this can be evidenced just by looking at...
This is going to be interesting to see how it shakes out, I dont' have much for or against, but want to comment on a couple things that have been said:
If the purchase happens, ATI would lose right to those designs very quickly :) And if they try to use any of them after they lose the...
Why do you say it should be a large boost? Moving from smithfield (90 nm dual core) to presler (65 nm dual core) helped Intel's temperature/power use and OC'ing, but didn't really close the gap with AMD. If AMD just puts the same K8 design on 65 nm, no reason to expect a big jump from that...
