new theory. it came back. but only after enabled VT-d in the BIOS (I use lots of VMs for work). Disabling the VT-d switch in the BIOS gets rid of the problem. guess I didn't need to swap out my hardware.

my guess would be that it's memory related and it was corrupting the screen buffer. a screen capture would accurately grab whatever was in the buffer.

Yep. exact same model (lenovo R400). just swapped the drive out and everything was running fine.

my roommate has the RB-51s and they do sound great. if you're running them at low to moderate levels I'd say you should be fine feeding them a full range signal. you just won't get the same response as if you had a dedicated sub to handle the LFE.
