Change your CPU speed and see what happens. 4.3Ghz vs 3.4Ghz is a big difference for this benchmark. Although, your numbers do seem lower than they should. Did you make sure to uncheck the options for "Run at native resolution" and "Test all Monitors"? It should run at the standard 1024x768

You can always run your games at lower resolutions and get a decent frame rate. However, to play at 2560X1600, you can never have enough power both GPU and CPU. So, if you're looking to just get by, your 9600GT will do alright. I played Crysis at 2560X1600 on a 8800GT and it was playable.

Track the gpu temps while your playing next time to see what really is happening. Until you know for sure it's overheating there's no point in going for an RMA yet.

Do you set BIOS HDD passwords? If not, there's no reason to hold off on installing. I doubt the firmware update will clear your drive.

There's always the FirePro Multi-View series for 4 monitors, but they aren't exactly gaming cards. Your best option is to just purchase a cheap PCI video card from the last gen of GPU's and you'll be fine.
