I'm having the same problem on my mid-2009 MBP. I can assure you that I'm not hibernating. On every boot into windows, the machine hangs at a black screen for about 30 seconds before the initial "starting windows" screen. Just like the video. Anybody figure this out? It's really...
Hello all,
I'm just trying to get one of these monitors from a reputable source in the US. Anyone have a lead on a place with them in stock?
Thanks,

Hey all,
I'm looking at the 26" due to my wife's bad vision. She'd like to run native res so the fonts don't look funky. I don't do graphics work, but see the advantage of wide gamut in the long run. In the short run, do people find the sRGB setting works well?
Thanks,
BoB
P.S. I'm...
Hey all,
Getting a new monitor for our home office. There's enough room for a 30" LCD. My wife's laptop is running 1024x768 and she doesn't have the best vision. It would be nice to have 1024x768 scaled exactly 2x to 2048x1536 and have black bars all around. Do any monitors allow this...
Hey guys,
I love your reviews, but I'm a software developer. I'd love it if I could see comparisons on CPUs when compiling code. Pick your favorite open source project...Mozilla...Linux kernel...whatever. Just something that takes more than a minute or two should show the differences...
On other machines I've used the one from:
http://www.whitneyfamily.org/Hacks/?item=Defrag
and been really happy with it. Not only does it defrag, but it packs. It uses the OS native routines to move blocks around, so it should be pretty safe. Plus, I indirectly know the guy who wrote it...
Reviving this thread. Just curious if defragging a hardware RAID5 array has any benefit. The controller already scatters your blocks. Does anybody know if it really helps?
Thanks,
BoB
Cool! FWIW, (I assume 1:1 and static NAT are the same) Linksys has a box called the RV0041 that's $350 and does 1:1 as well as having GigE ports on the inside. For replication between the two machines, this is handy. Since I haven't a spare machine, is there any hardware that will run...
Hey all,
I've got bags of screws and random cables in a bag. With XMas coming around, I think it's time to ponder a real toolbox-like piece of equipent, if not an actual toolbox. Anybody have suggestions? The only real requirement is that it be deep enough to hold my screwdriver set and...
Hello,
I'm about to donate several PCs to charity. I want to "pave" the hard drives in the most secure manner possible. I've usually just deleted all partitions, created one big one, then performed a full NTFS format of the resulting partition. For all but the most tech savvy users, this...
Using the firewall, can we open port 80 to multiple machines? That's another concern I have with any "consumer" grade solutions. We need both our main web server and our dev server open to the world at large.
Got an prosumer firewall suggestions?

Hey all,
Currently I co-locate a 1U box that hosts my DNS, mail, web, etc. I'm bringing up a dev server to develop apps. These boxes run Windows Server 2003 and I can't change that. That said, the hoster provides me a CAT5 cable that gets me on the internet and 8 IP addresses that...
Hey all,
I want to build a new database server. I'm looking for a 1U chassis with 4x SATA hot swap bays. I've seen what the Egg has to offer and I'm not digging anything. What's a good place to shop for server chassis?
Thanks,
BoB
It has the most recent BIOS. I didn't answer my question because the proc could always be defective. I'm trying to decide if I should start down the RMA path while I'm waiting on a clear response from Tyan about support.

Hey all,
I'm building a new server based on the Tyan S5151. The CPU support page for the mobo says the 2.8GHz Pentium D is supported, but the machine won't boot with that chip in. If I swap for a 3.8GHz Pentium 4, the machine boots fine. I'm wondering if my Pentium D is bad or if it's...
Hello,
On the box label for the Pentium D 820 I just got, it reads: "Requires Intel 945/955X Express Chipset". Is this for real? Can I not use this chip with any other chipsets? I just installed it in a Tyan barebones server with i7221 and it won't POST. :(

Hey all,
I just got my new computer put together, using an XFX nVidia 6600 PCIe card. When I hook up my Dell 2001FP via the DVI port, it won't wake up after it has gone to sleep. I can type things in and can tell that the computer is responding (Win-R, "notepad" <enter>, "I am alive"...
Damn, that's smooth. One question: did you have to use a different boot.bin or ISO creation option for a DVD? or does nLite just know that >650MB is a DVD?
Thanks a ton!

Hey all,
I got the great idea today to take my XPSP2 CD and turn it into a DVD that has XP and all the software that I regularly install on a new machine. I can make the ISO of the XP CD, but I'm not sure how to:
1) Make a bootable DVD image from it
2) Expand and add to that image
I...
Hey all,
So I'm running an X2 4400+ at 2625 (10.5 x 250) with an XP-90 + Nexus 92mm fan. My idle temps were right around 40C.
I felt that was too hot so I tried a faster spinning fan (Panaflo low speed 92mm) which moved twice the air. The temps stayed the same. I thought I might have...
Hey all,
I think the subject says it all. The MB temp and CPU temp seem to go up in lockstep. Am I catching air from the CPU cooler or is the ambient temp just going up?
Thanks,
BoB
Hey all,
My case is running a bit hot up top. I'd like to put a blowhole in my side panel (at the top). I have no tools and no time, but I do have some cash to throw at the problem. Is there anyplace in Seattle that specializes in this kind of stuff? If not, is there a mail-away place...
Yeah, that's really strange. I'm using an XP90 with SLOW speed Nexus 92mm. I just tickle 60C running 10.5x250(2625). I'm going to switch to the low speed Panaflo which moves swice the air for 7dB increase. If that keeps me in the 50's I'll call it good.
You might want to check your...
Hey all,
I'm trying to quiet the little fan on my RAID card (Intel IOP332). I tried a Zalman passive heatsink, but it gets really hot -- too hot to touch. I'm thinking about using a VGA cooler. If it fits, does that scare anybody?
Thanks,
BoB
Yeah, I know about the vcore issue. I am running at 1.5V (despite the BIOS setting of 1.475). Anyhow, I am quoting 55C at two instances of Prime95 torture test (large FFTs), but that's with the case side off. With the case side on, I do hit 60C. I'm going to swing by Fry's today and see if...
