2005FPW roll call

omg omg omg. Mine shipped on the 30th, 2 days ahead of schedule. It is in Anchorage right now and should be here any day now :) Right now I am expercting either a 50% chance of being ecstatic with my new moniter, or calling in to exchange it for a working one :( I sure hope it comes in all right.

Congrats bob63, no problems at all, that leaves some hope for the rest of us. Could you please send me some of your good monitor mojo? I'm waiting for my replacement 2005FPW. Says it's in transit, due 12/6 ish...

Got mine today... only a very slight backlighting issue, but only when u look at the monitor from off angles. My camera picks it up way better then i can even see but it is very slight and basically non-existant when using jsut my eyes looking dead on.

Ya that looks pretty good, looks like either you have a couple dead pixels too or your camera's ccd is strugglin :D

lol.. yeah, its the camera... i found that out by taking the black shots... :p .. notice some of the pictures have "dead pixels" that are not even on the monitor. ;)

I would be so mad if I had dead pixels on the frame of the monitor, or even on the power cord.

Good to know there's a possiblity of getting one without (or less) backlight problem. I'm going thru the replacement process vis [email protected]. It works better for me than spending an hour talking to ppl from India...

I got mine, I definitely notice the blacklighting issue. But mine isnt bad at all. What an awesome monitor btw. I LOVE the color on this.

The email option is great. I had a response within 6 hours asking for my shipping info to have my 2nd replacement sent out.

Great news guys, I got my replacement today and it totally has no backlight issues at all. However it does have 1 dead subpixel locked in the on position (looks green) towards the center of the screen. Not sure if I'm willing to risk a replacement over 1 pixel, thoughts?

BTW what revision is your replacement? It should say on the back of the lcd.

It's A00. I think I might initiate another trouble ticket with Dell.. I dont think for nearly 600 dollars that its too much to ask for a monitor without dead pixels and without backlight problems.

Got my 2nd 2005PFW today.

Great news, the 2nd one does not have the backlight issue! :D :D

However it does have 1 green dead pixel/stuck pixel? (What's the difference?) While my 1st monitor did not have any dead pixels. This is the 5th LCD I've owned and the only one to have a dead pixel so I'm kind of bummed about that.

I can live with the dead pixel and will keep the 2nd monitor. The funny thing is, the backlight issue is only really noticed when watching DVDs, which I don't do with my monitor. Thus I will probably end up noticing the 1 dead pixel more than I will the backlight issue! But I think I will keep the 2nd monitor since it will probably keep its value better than the one with the backlight issue, IF I ever sell this down the line, and that's a huge if as I can see this panel lasting me a good 5 years.

Overall my experience with Dell was positive and I'll buy from them in the future.

Now on to enjoying this awesome monitor. :p :D

Well it came in and its sitting in the box beside me now. im taking bets on wether or not I'll have to return it. ill give keep/return 40/60 odds. Any takers?

Bander, I wouldn't touch those kinds of odds, lol. Good luck and I hope it is a good one.

I'm accepting all offers of mojo (good only please) for my soon to arrive replacement 2005FPW... :p

Later,

I don't think my Geforce 6800 Ultra has an option for 1680x1250 res. Does anyone have this card and monitor and at what res are you using?

im so mad. when i walked home today from school i went and looked for my screen on the front porch. no screen, just a note from the UPS guy. he came and had it right there, but didnt deliever it because NO ONE WAS THERE TO SIGN FOR IT. i missed him by under an hour and a half too...damn school and its foolery. now i have to wait until monday to get it because the center in my city for UPS is closed on saturdays.

firey-eyez... i know how that feels, especially if its a video card or something new and exciting... anyways, i talked to some guy and he said that 5 of his buddies bought it w/o the backlight problem.... so thats good news anyways...

also, about the shipping, if its shipped thru DHL, you can try their "Sign Up for Delivery Notification" where they will either email you or call you right before they ship it... sounds like a good idea.. i put my cell phone number down just in case

its on this page after you enter ur tracking # down

Well its set up. Love the color, love thesharpness, love the size. only has 1 dead pixel, but it is not in any way annoying. But it definately has the backlight issue are all talking about, seriously considering exchange. Weird thing is, when I first set it up it was definately fine, but the backlight leakage came on about a half our after I started using it. But for 90% of its usage, it is a non-issure. I also notice that when I press with my fingers on the places where there is leakage, the bright parts will move around with my finger, definately some manufacturing flaw.

Nother weird issure, while games look fantastic, dvd movies look awful. blown out contrasts and very noticable noise in hte pictures. Since the moniter is so great, im thinking its a hardware or software problem, i havent watched divds on this computer for a month or more, but I cant imagine what it could be.

Another question. When I put my head near a corner and look at it diagonally(when the screen is black), the it kind of looks like a gradiant of purple ot pink. I was thinking that this is normal for LCD's (never had an lcd before but it look alot like how the screen would do that on some laptops ive used). Can other owners attest to this?

edit: reinstalled dvd software and it seemed to help a lot, mostly with the contrast prob. I think the main issue is that dvd movies werne't made for screens this big and so when your right up to it, it gets really noisy and lacks sharpness, when I back away, several feet, it looks normal agin.

It's possible that Dell may have just received a bad batch of monitors from the supplier (BenQ i think). People with back light issues, when was your monitor manufactured? Mine was in November. Also, when your replacement was ordered, did the order show up on your Dell Orders page? I don't see anything on mine yet. They said I would get it in 2 days, nothing yet.

bander, I too noticed that the back light issues shows up after leaving the monitor on for a while. I think the problem gets worse as the monitor warms up to standard operating temperature.

In regards to DVD image quality. When playing movies with Power DVD, if i sit very close to the monitor it can see a lot of video noise. I think this has more to do with the DVD software rather than the monitor. The monitor runs at much higher resolution than the DVD outputs so the software is scaling the video to fill the monitor. This is probably adding noise to the feed. I saw some options to have the dvd software adjust the monitors resolution in full screen mode, but I only think this will help on a CRT where you can set the resolution to whatever you want and the picture quality will still look good. On a LCD if you lower your computer's output resolution, the monitors video processors will have to perform scaling so that the feed fills all of the monitors pixels. But it's possible that the software scaler may be better than the monitor's scaler or vice versa (hopefully the latter as that's what the monitor does when i input a RCA or S-VIdeo feed) so it's worth playing around with. I also noticed the insanely high contrast in movies. I'll have to look for a way to adjust that.

This is definitely a try at your own risk sort of thing because u might cause further damage to the screen..... but I was told it's sometimes possible fix dead pixels or shut off lit dead pixels but softly "massaging" the screen. This is done by placing a soft cloth over a finger and rubbing the area of the screen where the dead pixel is located. Never tried it so I have no idea if it works.

I just ordered mine, $588 shipped (tax included). I hope I don't get any of these back light issues though, is this the same issue people were complaining about with the 2001FP??

For those with dvd graniness up close you ought to look into purchasing sonic's cineplayer. It was tested to be the best software dvd decoder you can buy, and i can attest that with dvds, I just threw in the matrix reloaded and even up close it looks excellent. There will always be a slight noise to things in movies not in the foreground due to mpeg compression, but it still looks absolutely amazing.

Well I made the decision to send for a replacement. The backlight leakage was just to annoying since I watch DVD movies alot on this. Also other people said that their moniters dont have the diagonal viewing problem mine has. I am just worrying that the replacement might be worse. If it is , does anyone know if I can just keep this one and send the replacement back? I onyl have time to do this once before vacation and I would hate to end up being stuck with a worse moniter.

The display is made by LG.

I should receive it this Wednesday. I hope it's in good condition.

There's an informal poll over here that would be very helpful if more users got involved:

Backlight leakage poll

It'd be useful if you leave your manufaturing date, revision info, etc. too.

hey magic, i am all up for creating a dell forum...but the problem is, it's not developed enough, and many people are too lazy to register in order to vote...

anyway you can turn it all off for the time being? once the community flourish, you can require poeple to register...

Ive been reading this board ever sense I concidered purchasing this monitor.. here is the results of my purchase :(

can't see images!

edit: saw after pasting link in address. Damn it sux, do u also got the back light issue?

yay! i FINALLY got my 2005fpw and i love it! no dead pixels at ALL. it looks great. despite the very slight motion blur that should be expected with LCDs, it has *slight* backlight leakage on the upper left corner. the right corner and the bottom are both pretty good. i was very afraid itd have major problems, but its very minor and im happy. i wont be returning it. it looks great with web browsing, whites are white (thanks google), and i played a little HL2 to see how badly it lagged at 1680 on my comp; it played fine for what i did with it. im overall very pleased with it; granted it isnt perfect but come on this is a $600 screen from dell, not a $2000 eizo flexscan ;) id give it an 8 of a possible 10.

hey firey, what did ur tracking info on DHL say? mine was shipped on the 2nd, and it's still not updated. I wonder if it'll come today.

Woohoo got home less than an hour before they delieved my beauty this afternoon, and I love it!! :D No bad pixels, no lines, and very little if any light leakage, will wait till it's fully dark later tonight and snap some shots then - it's a lil bright in here in the afternoons and I have reflections everywhere this time of day. Wow, I am amazed. Got an Axim very cheap thanks to Dellf too that should be here this week, I can only hope that I'm this impressed with it too. Off to some games... :)

i ordered on monday night last week, and the first time they tried to deliver it was friday of last week...does that answer your question?

on a side note, sadly, i turned the lights off and viewed some dark images with it and the backlighting is much worse than it seemed when the room was lit as well. its quite noticeable on black things...i didnt realize how bad it was at first. how many of you have had good luck returning it and getting one without back lighting leakage? other than that, i see no dead pixels or the green line that some of you have said you have. do you guys think i should return it because of the back lighting?

I just recieved my 2nd 2005FPW today, and it had really bad backlight problems and dead pixles. I'll try once more then I'll return both for a refund. I guess I'm not ready for a LCD. I can't handle paying $580 for something this flawed.
