I'm glad someone else mentioned Evil Genius, or else I was going to. Sims meets Take over the world? Sign me up. Sadly Vivendi dropped the ball big time on advertising, and the game didn't take off. I remember it won a few awards at the E3 (2004? maybe?) and the demo got me hooked. I...
I'm curious to see if the Sims 2 runs on whatever VM laptop you do a full review on. The fact that it woulnd't run on either of the preview machines you recieved could point to a build issue . As always, great (p)review
this freezing and fan spinning up I haven't witnessed yet, but then again, the motherboards or fan controllers might be different between the two lines (optiplex and XPS) Also of note: the HPs tended to be (in our case anyway) more prone to the behavior than the Dells, but the cross-vendor...
Hey guys, long time reader, rare poster unfortunately. I have read pretty much every system evaluation you have done, and continue to love every article I read.
Anyway, I want to make mention to the USB reboot issues you talked about being unresolved. I work for a University, in Classroom...
I just kept watching Ebay until one showed up. It took some time to find one that wasn't overpriced and/or overpriced shipping. When I was still looking there would usually be 3 or 4 up for sale. I shoehorned my pc into a G5 case recently. sorry, no pictures handy at the moment. :( When I...
What kind of budget are you going for? I specced out an Alienware Area 51 15.4 inch with a 6600 18 mb video card that runs WoW for me without a problem. whole system cost me 1600. One thing I would recommend is go for at least a gig of system ram, as WoW is a major memory hog. It runs at...
Yeah, I have had bad luck with the logisys inverters. their bulbs are fine. I have my logisys bulbs plugged into a Vantec inverter that I have had for probably 2 years now. Haven't had any problems with that inverter. I don't know where vantecs are sold anymore. xpcgear.com last time I...
Man, looking at that first pic of the illusion box, I had to stare at it for like 5 minutes to figure out where the seam was, and that was AFTER I had seen the work-in-progress pics. Very well done. I'll be watching this one for sure.
Ok, got the laptop, and ran WoW on it to test out the specs. running at 1680 x 1050 widescreen format, I can't max out the settings on it. If I drop down to 24 bit with 1x multisampling, and 2x antialiasing, I get 30-40 fps, with all detail levels set to high. This is in high...
Cool, thanks for the reply. I mainly specced this to play WoW, but would use it for some other games like quake4 and Black & White 2. I don't mind reducing rez if I have to on those, so WoW was the biggest concern. As soon as it shows up (supposedly tomorrow) I'll give my opinions on it.
Hehe, I actually used your method of frosting with spray. I found some stuff actually designed to be a glass frosting coat. I'm working on a G5 project as well at the moment. You've got some great ideas in this one. I've been following for a while. Keep it up!
alienware area 51 5500
Amazingly enough, speccing out similar hardware from dell made the dell more expensive, even avoiding the XPS line.
the 17 inch ones were a tad overpriced for my taste, and I didn't want a slab of a computer.
Hey guys,
I was just curious where the 6600 Go 128 Mb in a laptop stacks up against other laptop vid cards and possibly some desktop versions. I know that the 6800 and 7800 would be better, but the laptop is already ordered, and I don't need to do heavy gaming on it. More of a "take it with...
My evga 7800Gt kept getting really loud under load, to the point that it became a high pitched whine. temps were generally good, with the copper heatsink, but I couldn't stand the sound. Picked up the zalman VF-700. Now my entire computer is "nearly" silent.
This is more of a workaround than a solution. I have a similar issue al tabbing out of WoW, but Im not running SLI. Instead of using alt tab, I sometimes hit the windows key, to pop up the menu, which minimizes the game. It seems to work for me.
I had an eVGA 7800GT that would start screaming under load from the fan being so loud. I upgraded my cooler to this:
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16835118125
I can't even hear my vid card's fan anymore, and it runs about 9 C cooler under load to boot. The EVGA was...
Just posting to say I like where you've gone with this rig. I like the logo, and what you did with the mouse and keyboard.
On a side note, it's good to see another non-chicago modder. I'm located in Urbana, IL.
Anyway, keep it up. Can't wait for the finished product.
My 3700+ A64 is running on the old style stock cooler. I get temps around 31 C at idle, around 35 at load. that is with a single 120 mm fan as an intake on the case, and (at the moment) no exhaust fans around the CPU. I have to say that AMD does include a decent cooler with their chips. It...
I just checked. the image is now blacked out. Yet another great review of an OEM. I'ts nice to see a company that takes your input to heart. It sounds like they've cleaned up a lot of the issues you had before. granted, this new one is on a much more mature motherboard chipset, so that...
Ok, I looked and ddin't see this info in the FAQ or in previous posts, so I'll go ahead and ask. Does anyone have a wiring guide for the macintosh G5 case? Specifically I need the pin-outs of the front I/O panel (USB, power button, firewire) If anyone has this info, or a link, it'd be greatly...
After reading the massively positive article on the maingear desktop, I'd be interested in seeing the laptop or SFF lineup from them. I'm in the market soon for a laptop, and it's down to maingear or alienware <boo hiss, I know I know> and it'd help to choose between the two. On a side note, I...
working at another university here, as tech support for computer classrooms, I have to say that this is a really cool idea that could actually help others understand what kind of skills actually go into this hobby. Playing around with hardware that is usually in the hundreds of dollars with...
I've bought a couple OEM products from Newegg. The 9600 in my second rig was OEM. All it came with was a CD for drivers, and the video connections. Unless you feel the need for full documentation <a lot of which is available on the web> and a box with a lot of advertisements, OEM is fine IMO...
You could fold for the [H]orde...really...really....really slowly. ;)
No, honestly, I'm not sure what I'd put something like that to use for. I've never personally tried to part out a laptop. g'luck
As much as I've seen it done before, the idea of a mirror black outside with a flame red interior always looks hot to me. "black dragon with flaming innards" ya know. that kinda thing. Just my .02
Exhuming a buried thread. Waiting for my case to show up.
On a side note, I'm loving my new digital camera. It actually shows each individual blade on my fans. The computer is on when I took the pic. :D
Here's a ghetto mod from old school automotovie fixes. Could you break off the blades from the opposite side to balance the fan back out? People used to do this with their radiator fans in cars if a blade fell off if they were stuck on a highway.
Or get a replacement fan. :p
I want your couch (well, everything sitting on it at least). Seriously though, looks to be a killer rig when you get finished. Definitely make this into a worklog too. I'd watch it.
Nice. I'd watch that log. My office has some metalworking tools, and a lot of scrap metal from over the years. I'll be putting it to good use soon enough. I'll watch for your stainless case. You'll save money on paint for sure. ;)
Well, I just ordered my G5 case. Should be here in a little while. It'll probably take a while to finish the case, so the scorpio is my rig's home for a bit longer, but I plan to make a worklog, so keep your eyes open. So, did your brother like it? ;)
Yeah, every case I've done so far has been with duplicolor automotive paitn from autozone. Cheap, and does a decent job with polishing. I might mod the case when I move out of it. We'll see what I can come up with. I might do something similar to what you did with the aluminum in front, but...
