Hertz to Offer Electric Vehicles By The Hour

For a similar concept, check out Car2Go. It's only implemented in two cities, (I'm in one of them), but its an interesting idea. With Car2Go, they've taken this concept even further: rent small, efficient cars by the minute! I have no idea how well the program is going overall, but there's...

Laptops Affected by NVIDIA Chip Settlement Listed

Wow... I'd like to give some scope for how much this problem has affected me. I bought a Dell Latitude D820 during the time period (March 2007) with an NVIDIA Quadro GPU, and it completely went out on me this summer, only 3-4 months out of my warranty period. The display wouldn't turn on...

DARPA’s New Multi-Million Dollar “Terminator” Program

I think everyone's missing the point. It seems to me this would be a lot more useful as a training tool for real people to practice drills and such. There's far easier methods to pull a pin on a grenade than designing an entire autonomous arm and hand! The machines we really have to worry about...

The Official P45 Asus P5Q Motherboard Thread

basementjack: thanks for the response. I was able to show very minor improvements today: the first vista install screen now comes up in a couple of seconds or so. Yet nothing else has changed. I'm able to browse my HDDs if I do repair>load drivers. SO that's working properly, at least...

The Official P45 Asus P5Q Motherboard Thread

Yes, but I tried running Vista Install without any HDDs attached and I got the exact same behavior. If the problem is HDD related then, it would be at the chipset level rather than the HDD level. Maybe loading drivers for everything at the point when it asks if you want to repair or install...

The Official P45 Asus P5Q Motherboard Thread

I'm having a lot of the same problems as basement jack, ie vista (Ult, 64 bit) is taking way too long to bring up the first three or so setup pages, and refuses to go further than the "Enter your product key" page. I've tried reducing my HDDs (from two) down to one, i've tried AHCI mode, IDE...

    Dell 2407WFP-HC is available now

Thanks for the results, but could you try it again with the CRT set to 60 HZ as well? Not having them at the same refresh rate complicates the issue and inflates the true amount of lag.

Whats the real difference between a HDTV Monitor and a Computer monitor?

I think he means physically setting it up. It's pretty big and you need to sit a bit further back than you would with a monitor.

    Help with my 1st LCD

While your original monitor might have been bad or something, I don't think that was the cause of your problem with divx movies. Divx, like almost all codecs, works by putting things into squares. Your CRT was probably old and was blending all the blacks and dark grays together (I know mine...

AMD Blocking Access To The Frame Buffer

Still not answered: is this part of HDCP, and only activated when watching protected content, or it constantly like this?

AMD Blocking Access To The Frame Buffer

I think the bigger misunderstanding is that people actually think this guy knows what he's talking about. This is an op-ed piece with the BAREST of factual info. The only thing he's talking about is HDCP. The guy doesn't really know what he's talking about.
  20. S

AMD Blocking Access To The Frame Buffer

wtf? why is this getting attention? The guy doesn't know what he's talking about, and I'm sure the only quote in there was taken out of context. There's no way he could be talking about anything other than HDCP, which we've known about for, oh say TWO YEARS already! Why don't you people ever...

ITT Fined $100M For Illegal Exports

That's a funny coincedence, my dad 's company is right now being contracted by ITT to make power supply testers for the PSUs used in these goggles. He says that everything in the goggles is highly specialized, and ITT is the only ones that know how to make certain parts of it. Apparently...

About to purchase Lattitude D820...A Couple Questions

eVGA upgrade program, will this work?

That WOULD work...that is, if eVGA actually allowed the market to determine its prices in the upgrade program. Instead, they stick with the MSRP of the product from when it launched, generally throughout the entire lifetime of the product.

    So...question about LCDs vs CRTs...

60Hz is generally the max for LCDs. However, they work completely differently than CRTs. They don't flicker at all (except for backlight PWM, which isn't related to refresh rate), and so refresh rate doesn't really matter. However, you will be limited to 60 fps. I highly doubt that your...

    HDMI Card vs. DVI>HDMI Cable

No, IQ is the same... unless you throw HDCP into the mix, which WILL happen if you want to watch blu-ray or hd-dvd. HDMI = DVI + Sound data + HDCP

good (free) programs for stress testing GPU's?

I use ATI Tool artifact scanning, but the even on the most conservative setting, it doesn't catch the minor artifacts, so you have to find them yourself. Not that big of a deal, as I'm not aware of any other GPU stress test program that will even try to find artifacts.

    HDCP question

Minor nitpick on an otherwise perfect post about HDCP and ICT: The content is actually downsized to 960x540 (1/4 of 1080p), presumably to facillitate easier upscaling, I would guess. So, it's still better than SD ( 720 x 480 or 640 x 480 ).

Issue with very very dark monitor.

If its a crt, then its likely dead. If its an lcd, its a problem with the backlight, which might be fixable if its out of warranty. Contact the manufacturer if possible. Also, a brand/model might help a little, so post that.

Why does tearing doesn't happen all the time?

    7600GT - Sufficient for WoW @12x10?

One stick's okay, that way I can put in another 1 GB stick later. Memory performance is largely irrelevant unless you're cpu limited, which means you're already at a high enough fps anyways.. RE LCD: I'm just worried that if I go too cheap, the resolution increase will be weighed down by...

    7600GT - Sufficient for WoW @12x10?

Bump for any possible last minute suggestions. They will be ordering this tonight. Cheaper build Costlier Build Also, I will suggest to them spending a little extra cash on the cheaper build to get a 7600GT with it, as opposed to the x800 GTO. That would probably the best upgrade...
