Best way to adjust LCD "retinal burn" brightness?

I always have ambient light in the room. Initially I wanted to find a small lamp to put underneath the table the computer sits on, but I found a pretty big night-light that works just as well. I've never played without some kind of external light source. Otherwise my vision would probably be...

Best way to adjust LCD "retinal burn" brightness?

So, I ended up buying my very first LCD over a year ago. It was an Acer 24 inch, forget the exact model, but it was supposed have a 6ms gtg. Needless to say the screen was just too big, and the motion blur/ghosting drove me nuts, so I shipped it back and just ended up using my 19 inch CRT up...

Reinstalled Windows XP...why is my hard drive so bloated?

So I decided to reinstall Windows XP to see if it would solve a problem that many have been having with Bioshock. I have a partition (C: ) dedicated soley to Windows, and I reformatted it when prompted during the new installation. I had set aside 4gb just for this. On my last insalltion, with...

Dual Channel question: do both "pairs" have to be the same size?

I currently have 512 x 2 PC2 6400 modules running in dual channel, and if able, I'd like to add 1024 x 2 PC2 6400 on top of that. I really don't want to have to replace the ram I have now because it's not that old. Will I be able to add 2gb more ram and run that pair in dual channel while...

Can't flash card, A: Drive acting crazy...

I don't know what is going on, but ever since I did my latest Windows installation (just three nights ago) my floppy drive has been going crazy. It will now sit there and try to access every 5 seconds or so for no apparent reason. It's like it's trying to access each time my hard drive does...

ps2 or any system through a vid card to the monitor

I didn't understand your question then. I wouldn't think that a video card would have any effect at all on a console system, since the system has it's own dedicated graphics processors. For a video card to have any effect on it, wouldn't it have to be trying to render the source itself anyway?

ps2 or any system through a vid card to the monitor

If you couldn't hook up console systems to monitors, or it didn't make them look better, then why do people hook up their Xbox 360's to them? I also don't know how they are doing it, but I just assume that the more current monitors (last couple of years) have all the inputs on them, not on the...

G80 Souce: distant objects appear grey.

This problem is extremely easy to see in rooms that are not too big, but have objects you still have to walk a bit to reach. The teleportation lab with Alex shows this problem glaringly. As soon as you look at any object in the distance (computer monitor, chairs etc) they are all grey and...

FEAR and "hitching" with an 8800gts

Yep, that's exactly what it's like. Using a G5, and on a Func pad, so it's not that. Games did this previously as well when I had 512 mb and was using an optical. I thought maybe it had something to do with ram, but I also thought that 640 mb video ram + 1 gb regular would be more than...

FEAR and "hitching" with an 8800gts

Using a 620 Watt Corsair, have two hard drives, one DVD drive and an [email protected] (not too worried about OC right now) on an Evga 680i. I am also using the latest drivers from the Nvidia site, and those are the only drivers I've even bothered to install. This was after a new installation of XP...

FEAR and "hitching" with an 8800gts

Nothing is running in the background. 1 GB ram (I shouldn't need 2 GB for every other room...), yes my HD is defragged always, and Vsync is ON. Yeah, of course I get higher framerate with it off, but I don't like tearing. I also didn't realize all the benchmarks were done with it off? I get...

FEAR and "hitching" with an 8800gts

Not sure if that's the correct term, but what causes the stuttering in FPS games when running around? I just built a new computer and am using an EVGA 8800gts, thinking I would be able to play FEAR in all its graphical glory without any issues, especially after seeing all of the tests of it...

How do you mount a 2lb heatsink to a 775?

Unfortunately this specific heatsink does not come with a plate to attatch to the back...it's like the Zalman but without the backplate... http://www.anandtech.com/casecooling/showdoc.aspx?i=2937&p=2

How do you mount a 2lb heatsink to a 775?

Yeah, I had just looked at some of the packaging my parts were shipped in from Newegg thinking that a double layer of cardboard should be ok. I just don't want to end up accidentally shearing of bits and pieces and have them sticking to the bottom of the board though.

How do you mount a 2lb heatsink to a 775?

I have a Scythe Infinity that I have yet to actually mount, because it didn't look like there was enough clearance no matter which way I sat it between the northbridge and the dimm slots. So, it looks like I can get it in there, but barely. My problem is that I have no idea what I am...

I think my 8800gts is shutting off my monitor

I suppose as long as I'm not having to reset the system every couple of minutes or hours it won't "kill" the monitor, but it's getting up there in years, and no, I'm not ready for a flat panel. I had an Acer 24 inch back in September that I returned after only a week. I could not stand the...

I think my 8800gts is shutting off my monitor

It sounds like the card itself is shutting off, as I hear the fans stop and a "click", then the fan comes back on (along with the monitor) once the post screen happens. This doesn't sound like something that should be happening at all.

I think my 8800gts is shutting off my monitor

I just put together a new system last night, and now, each time I reset my computer (say Windows has to restart after installing something), my monitor always shuts off for 2 seconds and then comes back on. This is NOT good on an already old monitor (8 year old CRT). The only thing that has...

Can't get Scythe Infinity to fit in my Evga 680i

I cannot find a way to install this massive heatsink onto my motherboard. The case isn't really the issue, the board is. If I try to set it up with the fan blowing from bottom to the top of the case, the fan overlaps the chipset heatsink, and if I try to set the fan blowing from right to left...

    Card for an EVGA NF680I?

I just recently ordered everything for my new PC other than the sound card. I have been using onboard for the last six years, but after buying some HD 280's, I started hearing some ungodly hissing or what sounds like wind for the lack of a better description. I can't tell if it's just the...

    Acer AL2423W 24" Review, Pics.

Yes, sticking to CRT would be ideal, except for the fact that they aren't in high demand anymore, so are barely produced? Indiscriminate consumers that don't really care what they end up with are what pushed the LCD market to where it is now, and it's basically what you are forced to buy...

    Acer AL2423W 24" Review, Pics.

I don't buy the "no mouse lag" claims at all. Or maybe I was just one of the lucky ones to recieve a really bad panel? Setting the mouse up to 2000 dpi was much slower on this monitor than 800 dpi on my old CRT. If that's not input lag, then what is it? And by "getting ugly fast" I mean you...

    Acer AL2423W 24" Review, Pics.

Shouldn't base a purchase off pretty static pictures if you're wanting a good gaming and movie viewing screen. Of course the statics look good. Move ever so slightly though and it gets ugly real fast.

    NEC LCD2690

Hopefully this turns out inaccurate. I really wanted a 22" with the same specs and panel type as the 20". I found a 24" to be a little too big for gaming actually.

LCD screens really worth it for gaming?

It doesn't really matter how it's done, the fact remains that LCD blacks are terrible compared to CRT, and that's all that matters. And who runs their CRT at 60hz anyway?

    22" LCD Review

Not sure if this is what you were implying, or were just making a statement to the reviewed monitor, but the NEC uses IPS, not TN. And from what I've read so far, it's supposed to be using the same panel in the 22 as it does the 20.

    22" LCD Review

Nice review. I recently returned a 24 inch Acer, so I doubt I will pick up this one, but good review regardless. I will probably just hold out for the 22 inch Nec MultiSync 22WGX, as I find their 20 inch seems a bit small, yet a 24 inch was simply too big for me.

Acer AL2416WD or Sony SDM-P234/B for gaming?

Acer has a lot of input lag. Hell, using a G5 mouse set to 2000 dpi with this monitor is much slower than 800 dpi on a CRT. Considering the human eye and brain cannot process much more than 72 fps, I highly doubt you can discern what you think you are.

New NEC 20WMGX2!!! (Pics inside 56K)

So, I just sent the Acer back, and it looks like I've basically thrown $150 (15% fee and shipping) down the drain simply because I had to deal with mail order only. The CC and BB around here don't really have what I was looking for. Now I have to wait about a week to get my money back, and am...

    Help! 24" Dell or Acer

Then you probably simply '"adjusted" to them. And I'm sure if you were used to moderatly crappy panels, the Acer would be fantastic for you. I never "got used to" the input lag, motion blur, locked refresh rates and "blacks are grey", and don't really feel I should have to.

    Help! 24" Dell or Acer

How long have you been using LCD screens? The Acer was my first after gaming on a 19 inch CRT for seven years and I notice ALL of the noted drawbacks of LCD's and then some. Who knows if the monitor I got was defective, but I doubt that is the case. The image quality is superior to my old CRT...

Buying a CRT - need advice on specific models

How do you know that NewEgg will have these on sale in a few days, do you work there? The reason I ask is because I am sending back my Acer 24 inch, and was going to get the 20 wide NEC LCD, but the FP2 looks like something I would honestly rather have, regardless of how much space it will take up.

    CRT Whining noise?

Pretty much. My friends had a cheap Dell monitor that started doing that all of the time, as soon as you would turn it on, until you shut it off. It was only around three years old. My seven year old CRT started doing that a few months ago, but it does not continually whine, it comes and...

    Help! 24" Dell or Acer

I have the Acer, and it has noticeable input lag and the viewing angles are terrible and the lighting is not uniform. Move slightly and your screen will either brighten or darken. Colors are nice, as is the image quality, but the motion blur is horrible, and the Acer is supposed to be better...

New NEC 20WMGX2!!! (Pics inside 56K)

Since it's not adjustable height wise, how high is the bottom of the screen from the desk? I'm sure it would be easy enough to find something to set the monitor on top of for better height, but still pretty annoying.

How long does it take to adjust going from CRT?

You must have had a much more responsive screen with better viewing angles then. Either that, or constant motion blurring doesn't bother you at all...or you can't really see it. Seriously considering just getting the NEC. Maybe scaling down the screen size will actually go a long way in...
