Interesting read. I have the 1st release PNY Ultra (bios .13) and have never had a single issue. Seems they say the latest bios reduces performance by relaxing timings. I am rather sceptible about the bios being an issue since there are so many people NOT having problems with older bios.
Basically what this proves is Nvidia's stock design isn't really as bad as many claim. Why BFG would put a aftermarket cooler on the GT when they know its going to run even hotter is beyond me.
LOL....HL2 isn't here. Doom, however is, and that's Valve's loss. I personally believe HL2 will be somewhat of a let down because it's so late it (graphically) will be lacking compared to the new stuff coming out.
Guys, be sure to pull the stickers on your fans. Many have posted in the forums, with issues. The stickers are falling off while the card is running. In some cases, it became lodged in the fan, causing it to stop. One person smoked his card this way. I looked at my Ultra, and the PNY...
I've seen one person over on the NV-News forum that got a BFG version of the card. He ended up having nothing but problems. Basically he was not able to run the card at standard extream settings. He ended up downclocking the card about 10MHz then it was running ok. The funny thing is my PNY...
If you guys can hear your 6800's that much then there is something wrong. I have 4 fans in my case, and I cannot hear my Ultra at all. It runs 51c / 72c @ full load.
Well since I am the one who origionally came up with the procedure described by the person who started this thread (I posted it 1st over on the NVnews forum), I can tell you my temps of 51 / 72c are accurate. When I 1st used the procedure to see what my Ultra was doing, I was running much...
OK, just want to make a correction. The above statement is not correct. All latest benchmarks are showing otherwise. Please ignore this misinformation.
Door open = no air flow = hot card
Door close = air flow = cooler card
Door closed / with lack of air flow = card runs the same as door off = hot card :)
It is late, I agree, but tomorrow off :)
Well, that is the point I'm trying to make. The case should make a difference. The fact that you report that it is not, tells me you have less then optimal air-flow in-and-out of your case.
When running the tool, my Ultra goes to 72c at 75 degree (f) room temp. My ambiant monitor goes up as well. The key here is to pull your case cover off. I suspect if you do your GPU temp will go down slightly. This would indicate a lack if case air flow. When I pull my cover I go from 72c...
Nvidia spent in excess of $400,000,000 to develop the N40, so I don't mind paying $499 for my 6800 Ultra. If you want the bleeding edge GPU and DDR3 you have to pay. Nvidia and ATI spend a big chunk of there profits developing their next GPU.
